Notes: Magneto-optical, compositional, and magnetic properties of Biz(LuSmPb)3−zFe5O12 (z=0.05–0.9) grown epitaxially on Nd3Ga5O12 substrates from melts with different PbO/Bi2O3 ratios were studied. Chemical analysis by an x-ray microanalyzer indicates that Bi is incorporated into these films primarily by replacing Sm. Room-temperature Faraday rotation θF was measured at a wavelength of 633 nm. θF is proportional to Bi concentration z in the film and is −2×104 deg/cm for z=1.0. θF of Ga-substituted films for a Ga concentration of 0.6 was about 20% smaller than that of the unsubstituted film. The magnetic uniaxial anisotropy field Hk measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer ranged from 2500 to 5400 Oe. From the analysis of Hk data, it was found that Pb-Lu and Bi-Lu pairs were major contributors to Hk of the present garnet films.

Notes: In vitro IgE secretion by atopic and normal peripheral-blood lymphocytes was examined in culture with pokeweed mitogen or Staphylococcus aureus strain Cowan-I (StaCw) or without mitogen. IgE secreted in culture supernatants was measured with double antibody radioimmunoassay. Enumeration of IgE-secreting cells was made by a protein-A plaque assay. IgE was detected in increasing quantities in supernatants of cultured lymphocytes without mitogen up to the 12th day. IgE-plaque-forming cells were formed by the lymphocytes in large numbers on days 4–7 in cultures with mitogen. These results suggest that not only mitogen-independent but also mitogen-dependent subpopulations may exist in the IgE-secreting cells.

Notes: Summary This paper is a report on our studies on superinfections in respiratory tract infections treated during the years 1981–1984. The isolated strains ofStaphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecium and glucose non-fermentative gram-negative rods such asPseudomonas aeruginosa were resistant to third-generation cephem antibiotics. These organisms proved to be widely distributed in hospitals and were frequently isolated from the sputum, excised lung and cardiac blood. The colonization of the sputum by bacteria in respiratory tract infections before, during and after treatment with third-generation cephem antibiotics revealed a tendency for these organisms to appear after treatment. Among the gram-positive cocci,S. faecium was most resistant to these antibiotics, followed byS. faecalis, S. epidermidis andS. aureus in that order. The incidence of resistant isolates in 1984 exceeded that in 1983, suggesting an annual increase in resistant bacteria.
