Notes: Abstract The aim of this work was to compare the capacities for fermentation and synthesis of malate from phosphoenolpyruvate in roots and Rhizobium nodules of Pisum sativum. The nodules and the cortices and apices of roots had similar activities of glycolytic enzymes and enzymes of ethanolic and lactic fermentation when expressed on a protein basis. The activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase was similar in nodules and apices, and three to four fold lower in cortices. All three tissues had very high activities of malate dehydrogenase, significant activity of NADP-malic enzyme, and no detectable activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. These results do not support the belief that nodules have a substantially greater capacity to convert phosphoenolpyruvate to malate than roots, or that there are major qualitative differences in the pathways of fermentation of nodules and roots.

Notes: Summary The presence of cold sensitivity was investigated in three groups of patients; untreated hypertensives and hypertensives treated by a beta-adrenoceptor blocker (propranolol) or by a combined alpha-and beta-adrenoceptor blocker (labetalol) at two ambient temperatures. At a comfortable ambient (24°C) one-third of the untreated and those treated with beta-blockade only showed cold sensitivity as compared with 16% of patients on the combined therapy. Under conditions of mild cold stress (20°C) cold sensitivity increased in frequency in all three groups, more than half of the untreated and beta-blocked patients were affected and greater than one-third of those with alpha- and beta-blockade. These findings indicate that in the general population of hypertensives treatment with beta-adrenoceptor blockade alone may have little effect on the peripheral vasculature and that a useful degree of protection may be provided by therapy which blocks both receptors.

Notes: Summary Canine calicivirus (CaCV), isolated from feces of a dog with diarrhea, was readily propagated in cultures of canine cells and in a dolphin cell line. Serologic evidence indicated many dogs in at least one geographic area had been infected with CaCV, but its role as an etiologic agent of disease was not established. In cell culture most CaCV virions were strongly cell-associated making purification difficult. CaCV was established as a member of the Caliciviridae by morphology and physicochemical properties of virions (density, sedimentation rate, single major polypeptide, RNA genome size), although some of the properties differed slightly from those of previously described caliciviruses; evidence was also obtained for caliciviral RNA species in infected cells. Based on tests with antisera to numerous caliciviruses and presumed caliciviruses, CaCV appeared to be not closely related to any previously described virus except the stunting syndrome agent of chickens.

Notes: Abstract The solubilised ethylene-binding site (EBS) of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cotyledons is an asymmetrical protein with a sedimentation coefficient of 2 S and a Stoke's radius of 6.1 nm (determined by ultracentrifugation on isokinetic gradients and gel-permeation chromatography, respectively). The molecular weight and frictional ratio were calculated as 52 000–60 000 and 2.37–2.48, respectively. The EBS has an isoelectric point at between pH 3–5, determined by isoelectric focussing and exhibits a negative charge at pH 8 during non-denaturing electrophoresis. The electrical charge on the EBS is shielded; the EBS does not bind to anion-exchange media under the experimental conditions reported here, is not precipitated by ammonium sulphate and does not precipitate at its isoelectric pH. The EBS preferentially partitions into detergent phases. The results indicate that the EBS is a hydrophobic protein complexed with detergent in aqueous solution. The techniques used to characterise the EBS also resulted in varying degress of purification.

Notes: Summary The load transmitted through fresh fractures of the tarsometatarsus of adult chickens was varied by 40% more, or less, than the body weight to determine the effect of load-bearing on fracture healing. The healing fracture was examined for size and strength at 14 days, but no significant differences were detected in any group. The technique was sensitive enough to detect the differences between healing fractures at 7, 10 and 14 days. In this experiment load transmission was not found to be an important factor in fracture healing.

Notes: Abstract A new axiomatic basis for the foundations of decision theory is introduced and its mathematical development outlined. The system combines direct intuitive operational appeal with considerable structural flexibility in the resulting mathematical framework.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zur Quantifizierung der Bakteriämie bei Laboratoriumstieren wurde eine Schnellmethode entwickelt.
Notes: Summary A rapid technique has been developed to quantitate the degree of bacteremia in laboratory animals. Direct staining of blood smears with acridine orange and enumeration using fluorescent microscopy allowed quantitation ofHaemophilus influenzae in blood at densities from 105 to 108 cfu/ml. This technique will facilitate the accuracy with which therapeutic trials are conducted in laboratory models of infection.

Notes: Abstract The EXOSAT ME observations of 3C58 and G21.5-0.9 are presented. The data for these objects is considered in conjunction with the data available from EXOSAT for the Crab-like SNR's Crab and Vela X. The objects have single power law spectra with a range of spectral indices of 0.6 to 1.5, 3C58 and Vela X being similar to the Crab whilst G21.5-0.9 and the source associated with the Vela pulsar have significantly flatter spectra. The derived column density for G21.5-0.9 is consistent with a distance of ∼ 5 kpc. The X-ray luminosities and overall electromagnetic spectra of these objects are investigated as age indicators and compared to current model predictions.

Notes: Abstract Cygnus X-3 was observed with the GSPC on board EXOSAT on several occasions, one observation lasting for 7 orbital cycles. The width W and centroid energy E of the iron emission feature near 6.7 keV show a smooth, correlated, sinusoidal-type modulation, the iron line being widest and E being lowest just before X-ray maximum. The line profile may show a low-energy wing, but apart from this does not deviate strongly from a symmetric, Gaussian-type shape. The continuum at higher energies than the line is not completely smooth, but shows ‘bumps’ which remain stable in time. Two possible explanations are discussed for the correlated variation of E and W as a function of orbital phase.
