Notes: Abstract Presented here are Exosat LE1-CMA images of fields in the Vela SNR. Soft X-ray emission is observed in the north of the remnant indicating a filamentry structure. No X-ray emission was seen in two fields to the west and south-west which have optical filaments but were not studied by Einstein. The Vela pulsar is observed and is significantly broader than a point source indicating the presence of a small nebula as seen by the Einstein HRI. The flux seen from the point source in the CMA is consistent with blackbody radiation from a 106 degree neutron star of approx. 10 km radius. A bright ridge of emission is seen north of the pulsar which may be part of the extended synchroton nebula seen in the 2–10 keV range.

Notes: Abstract A series of observations of the Virgo cluster of galaxies with the Medium Energy experiment on board EXOSAT are presented. These take the form of two orthogonal scans meeting at M87. The observed count rates have been compared with those obtained with the IPC on board the EINSTEIN observatory and are found to be consistent with the the IPC surface brightness distribution. This fact together with spectral data obtained with Exosat indicates that the region around M87 is more or less isothermal (T ∼ 2–3 keV) out to 〉 80 arc min from the centre. Although a slight hardening is seen near the optical centroid of the cluster the results do not support a model which involves a hot (∼ 8 keV) intra-cluster medium. A mass of ∼ 5 × 1013 solar masses is derived for the inner 90 arc minutes of M87.

Notes: Abstract In recent years demographic researchers have devoted considerable attention to two topics: (1) migration to the sun belt and (2) racial and economic transformation of neighborhoods. This study addresses both, and develops a theoretical and analytical model to test the relationship of intra-urban and inter-urban migration patterns as they relate to race and social class. The study measures and analyzes patterns of racial and economic transition in neighborhoods for two Oklahoma SMSAs. Comparisons are made between differential degrees of residential segregation accounted for by in-migrants, utilizing U.S. Census tracts for 1970 and 1980. The model, once specified and evaluated, demonstrates that patterns and factors traditionally associated with residential segregation may have less relevance forsun belt cities in the coming decades.
