    Notes: The use of a complete and nonsingular set of Trefftz functions in the solution of quasi-harmonic equations is demonstrated and shown to be often superior to the more conventional singularity distribution in boundary-type approximation. Procedures for coupling separate domains of such solution and indeed of deriving equivalent finite elements are demonstrated.

    Notes: Introduced herein is a generalization of Newmark's time marching integration scheme, called the β-m method. Like the SSpj method (introduced in Parts 1 and 2 of this series), the β-m method provides a gcneral single-step scheme applicable to any set of initial value problems. The method is specialized by specifying the method order m along with rn integration parameters, β0, β1, …, βm-1. For a particular choice of m, the integration parameters provide a subfamily of methods which control accuracy and stability, as well as offering options for explicit or implicit algorithms. For the most part, attention is focused on the application to structural dynamic equations. Most well-known methods (e.g. Newmark, Wilson, Houbolt, etc.) are shown to be special cases within the β-m family. Hence, one computationally efficient and surprisingly simple algorithm unifies old and new methods. Stability and accuracy analyses are presented for method orders m = 2, 3 and 4 to determine optimal parameters for implicit and explicit schemes, along with numerical verification.

    Notes: ‘Dynamic’ or ‘viscous’ relaxation procedures have not gained much popularity in finite element analysis in which the direct (Gaussian elimination) solution dominates. Reasons for this are various - the most important being the rather slow convergence generally achieved for such procedures. However, it is possible to accelerate this quite dramatically and a method of doing so is shown in this paper. With the use of such acceleration and the inherent advantages of greatly reduced storage requirements and simplicity of programming, relaxation procedures promise an exciting possibility for the solution of large two- and three-dimensional problems in both linear and nonlinear ranges.

    Notes: Recently, a new type of infinite elements which uses r-1 decay was proposed. They were applied to exterior wave problems and good results were obtained. In two-dimensional problems, however, it was necessary to move the origin of the r-1 decay in order to model the outgoing wave more accurately, because it decays roughly as r-1/2. In this paper, the mapped infinite elements with r-1/2 decay and the necessary numerical integration procedure are presented. These elements do not require any artificial movement of the origin. Several example problems are solved. The results show that the infinite elements with r-1/2 decay here give much more accurate values than the infinite elements with exponential decay and any damper elements.

    Notes: The shear locking problem for the bilinear degenerated thick shell elements, when used in the context of thin shell structures, can be overcome by a generalized displacement method presented in this paper. The transverse shear energy in the degenerated thick shell elements is totally suppressed by introducing discrete Kirchhoff constraints in each element. The constrained variational problem based on the nodal displacement space is transformed into an unconstrained one based on a so-called generalized displacement subspace. It is shown that shear looking phenomena completely disappear and no degradation of results is observed as the ratio of thickness to span approaches zero.

    Notes: Several models describing soil response under cyclic loading and the ‘liquefaction’ potential have been introduced in recent years with limited success. Most of these are over-complex for realistic parameter identification and have not been widely adopted for practical use. In this paper we introduce a relatively simple modification of the well-known critical state model which accounts reasonably well for the phenomena observed under cyclic tests and indeed improves the performance of critical state, models in monotonic loading.This model is compared with experimental results and with the ‘densification model’ introduced earlier by the authors and shows good predicitive capacity.The model is of a generalized plasticity-bounding surface type. In its simplest form, suitable for clay-like materials, it requires the identifications of a single parameter additional to those required for a standard, critical state model.

    Notes: This paper extends the bounding surface, generalized plasticity, model of Part I to reproduce the behaviour of sands under both static and transient loading.The essential features of the first model are preserved but the following changes are introduced: (i)The shape of the yield surface is modified.(ii)A non-associative flow rule is introduced.(iii)The hardening parameter of the bounding surface includes not only volumetric but also deviatoric plastic strain.(iv)Plastic volumetric and deviatoric strains are introduced during unloading.Each of these modifications can be introduced separately in a hierarchical manner to model in an improved way the behaviour of sands. Good comparison with experimental observations is recorded. The simplicity of the original model is preserved with modifications being introduced progressively to model rising complexity of the phenomena.

    Notes: This note introduces certain stress smoothing procedures and the so called ‘Loubignac-Cantin’ iteration for restoration of momentum balance in the smoothed stress fields. It is shown that this iteration corresponds precisely to the solution of mixed formulations in which the stresses (or strains) and the displacements are used as primary variables. The procedure has a very wide field of application and promises to add considerable accuracy to f.e.m. results by a small additional expenditure.
