Notizen: The structure of three cross-linked polymers containing naphthalenic rings in their backbone structure was investigated by dynamic swelling and thermal analytic techniques. It was determined that the pyridine and n-proplyamine transport in microparticles (40 μm) of these polymers was non-Fickian, often approaching case II transport and sometimes even supercase II transport. The thermal analysis showed relatively stable structures up to about 350°C.

Notizen: 13C NMR spectra of N-phenylthioureas, N-phenyl thiocarbamates and N-phenyl dithiocarbamates of the ethyl and n-butyl type are compared. Significant differences are observed in the chemical shift of the thiocarbonyl carbon, which do not parallel the electronegativity of the bonded heteroatom.

Notizen: White PVC siding which has been exposed to sunlight will after removal from the sunlight develop a darker color (yellow-brown). The longer this sample remains unexposed to sunlight the greater the color development. Testing has indicated that one or more photochemical mechanisms are occurring during this color development. A sample which appears yellow upon arrival at the home location after outside exposure can be re-whitened by re-exposing the sample to sunlight. Drastic color change will occur within a short period of time, usually less than 72 hours. This sample will have attained its white color with little or no yellowing visible when an original unexposed sample is held next to it. Testing conducted at an Arizona test site has confirmed these theories. Six months and one year weathered white siding samples, when measured at the test site, both experimental and commercial, showed that when the weathered samples are removed from the test racks and tristimulus values are measured daily, marked color changes occur rapidly. This paper addresses data which indicate that color development does occur but only in the very thin surface (5 to 10 micron layer) of the weathered samples. If these samples are washed and the abrasive action is sufficient to remove the surface layer, color development will no longer occur during non-exposure to sunlight.

Notizen: Four superoxide dismutase (SOD) (E.C. 1.15.1.1) isozymes were present in whole tissue homogenates of Musca domestica when examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. One of the isozymes contained manganese, and the other three contained copper and zinc. All were observed in each of the body tagma (head, abdomen, and thorax) and at each developmental stage (egg to adult). The copper- and zinc-containing isozymes purified from newly emerged, adult M. domestica had a relative molecular weight of 34,800 as determined by gel filtration chromatography but consisted of two equal-size subunits of 16,000 as measured by sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. An isoelectric point between 4.8 and 5.1 was measured. Approximately 2 mol each of copper and zinc were present per dimer. The three copper, zinc isozymes were identified as charge variants. The amino acid composition of the enzyme was similar to that of copper, zinc-containing superoxide dismutases from other sources.Purified housefly copper, zinc superoxide dismutase was neither deactivated nor able to protect lactic dehydrogenase against deactivation in the presence of light and rose bengal, a known generator of singlet oxygen. The role of SOD in the phototoxic reaction involving rose bengal is discussed.

Notizen: Apparatus is described for the acquisition of Raman spectra with excitation at wavelengths as short as 184 nm. The H2 Raman-shifted output of an Nd:YAG laser is directed on to a free-flowing sample, and the Raman photons are collected and dispersed by a scanning 1.26 m single monochromator equipped with a 2400 groove holographic grating and a solar blind phototube with integrating electronics, or by a 0.5 m spectrograph with an 1800 groove holographic grating and a reticon multi-channel detector. Data for air-sensitive samples are obtained by enclosing the sample jet in an inert gas purged shroud equipped with a UV-transparent optical window. Raman spectra are reported for phenylalanine at a series of excitation wavelengths down to 184 nm. They show a sharp transition between 200 and 192 nm from vibronic to Franck-Condon scattering. At 200 nm, the intensities of the vibronically induced ν8a and ν8b modes, at 1606 and 1586 cm-1, are nearly the same as that of the 1000 cm-1 ν1 ring breathing mode, whereas at 192 nm the relative intensities of the former bands are dramatically dimished. In contrast, the ν8a and ν8b modes of tyrosine continue to show enhancement comparable to the ring breathing modes at 192 nm, the maximum of the strong 1Bα, b tyrosine absorption. The spectrum of insulin at 192 nm shows comparable contributions from tyrosine, phenylalanine and amide vibrations, whereas at 200 and 218 nm excitation the aromatic contributions are dominant.
