    Notes: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of beef muscle produced three large endotherms occurring at 55–57°C, 65–67°C and 81–83°C. Based on earlier DSC research on isolated proteins (Privalov 1979), the concept of cooperative units participating in thermal transition phenomena was applied to beef muscle endotherms. Analysis of these endotherms by the van't Hoff relationship and Borchardt and Daniels kinetics analysis revealed reaction orders of ca. 0.6 to 2.1, 3.5 to 5.1 and 1.5 to 3.1, respectively, for the three muscle endotherms. The reaction orders for these endotherms were influenced by muscle type, fiber sarcomere length and conditioning. Aging led to an increase in reaction order whereas increased sarcomere length was accompanied by a decrease in reaction order or number of cooperative units. Changes in the number of cooperative units participating in the endotherms is discussed in the context of meat tenderization and conditioning. It appears reaction order analysis of the T3 transition (81–83°C) may correlate with meat tenderness.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between circling behavior and the dopaminergic (DA) innervation of the striatum was investigated in rats. Vmax for DA uptake in crude mitochondrial (P2) fractions was used as a measure of the density of striatal DA terminals. Females, as a group, rotated away from (i.e., contralateral to) the side containing the higher V max for DA uptake, while there was a nonsignificant trend in the opposite direction for the males. Further analysis suggested that in both sexes there are two kinds, or populations, of rats: those with their turning biases directed away from (Contra〉Ipsi rats), and those with their turning biases directed towards (Ipsi〉Contra rats) the side containing the striatum with the higher V max for DA uptake. Evidence supporting this two-population hypothesis includes: (a) For both groups of rats the slope of the best fit linear relationship between the contralateral/ipsilateral V max asymmetry and rotational behavior is equal in magnitude, though opposite in sign; (b) Mean contralateral V max is greater for the Contra〉Ipsi rats than for the Ipsi〉Contra rats, while the mean ipsilateral V max is virtually identical for the two groups; (c) The two groups of rats can be differentiated behaviorally on the basis of a measure of total lateralized activity, % turning. In addition, the K m for DA uptake for the females (1.81±0.07×10−7 M) was found to be significantly greater than for the males (1.51±0.04×10−7 M; P〈0.005).

    Notes: Abstract Fifty-six healthy adult males were administered the Type A Structured Interview and assessed as exhibiting either Type A (N=42) or Type B (N=14) behavior pattern. They were monitored for systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate (HR) responses during a series of six challenging tasks: Mental Arithmetic, Hypothesis Testing, Reaction Time, Video Game, Handgrip, and Cold Pressor. The results indicated that Type A subjects exhibited greater cardiovascular responses than did Type B subjects during some (Hypothesis Testing, Reaction Time, Video Game and Mental Arithmetic) but not all (Handgrip and Cold Pressor) of the tasks. These results are discussed in terms of previously reported findings on conditions that do and do not produce differences in Type A/B cardiovascular stress responses.

    Notes: Summary Photoreceptor axons in the first optic neuropil of the dipteran flies Musca domestica and Drosophila melanogaster were examined with electron microscopy. The objective was to determine ultrastructure, persistence and glial source of the capitate projections found within these neurons. Capitate projections are simple or compound processes of epithelial glial cells which profusely insert into form-fitting folds of axon terminals of the peripheral retinular cells (R1–6) in the synaptic plexus portion of the first optic neuropil. These neuro-glial junctions may be simple indentations, have a head with a single stalk, or possess a single, circular stalk from which 3 or 4 bulbous (glial) heads are elaborated. Using serial thick sections of Drosophila neuropil for HVEM we were able to observe that the stalks connecting nearly all capitate projections led directly to a glial cell. Thus no disembodied heads were found suspended in axoplasm. Capitate projections appeared to be persistent structures, present in young as well as senescent adults. No evolution of form was found; thus 3 distinct expressions of these glial processes (without transitional forms) are present. From freeze-fracture replicas and serial HVEM sections it was determined that there were approximately 3 capitate projections per μm2 in Drosophila and Musca, respectively. About 800 capitate projections exist per Musca axon terminal or about 5 times the number of chemical synapses. Cp's were slightly larger in Drosophila than in Musca, although the Musca retinular axon has twice the diameter and length of that of the fruit fly. The evidence was reviewed in light of the likely supportive function of capitate projections on the R1–6 terminals.

    Notes: Abstract Bee vemon (BV) is used in folk medicine to treat arthritis. It has antiinflammatory effects in animal models of rheumatic disease. We have studied the effects of BV on human neutrophil production of superoxide (O2 −) and hydrogen peroxide, finding potent, nontoxic, dose-dependent production inhibition. Melittin, the major fraction of BV (50–70%) shows high-affinity calmodulin binding Kd 3 nM). Drugs which bind calmodulin, such as trifluoperazine, inhibit O2 − production by human neutrophils. For these reasons we have investigated the effect of melittin and other BV peptides on O2 − production by human peripheral blood leukocytes. We show that melittin inhibited O2 − production both pre- and poststimulation in contrast to other BV fractions which were without effect. Oxygen radicals and their derivatives from inflammatory cells are implicated in the tissue damage occurring during inflammation. The inhibition is due to a direct effect on cells, and not indicator medium, dismutation, toxic or scavenging effects. We propose that melittin may serve as a prototype small (mol wt 1280), cationic, amphipathic, calmodulin-binding, membrane-active, superoxide-production-inhibiting peptide, providing a model for peptides which could have a role in in vivo regulation of radical production.
