Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of Different Cyclopolyphosphanes by Cathodic Reduction, Electrochemical Investigation of Phenyldichlorophosphane, o-, m-, p-Bromophenyldichlorophosphane and tert.-ButyldichlorophosphaneThe electrochemical properties of selected dichlorophosphanes R-PCl2 (R = C6H5, o-BrC6H4, m-BrC6H4, p-BrC6H4, t-Bu) have been investigated by the Differential-Pulse-Polarography (DPP) and by cyclic voltammetry. On the basis of the obtained results an electrolysis (cathodic reduction) has been carried out with these substances in a 1,2-dichlorethane/0.1 M tetrabutyl-ammonium tetrafluoroborate solution with a mercury pool. The following cyclopolyphosphanes have been prepared, isolated, and characterized: (C6H5P)5,(4); (o-BrC6H4P)4; (m-BrC6H4P)5,(4,6); (p-BrC6H4P)5,(4); (t-BuP)4.

Notes: Summary The chances of survival for patients with interruption of the aortic arch depend mainly on early recognition and medical treatment before symptoms of cardiogenic shock appear, and specifically on early operative repair after the exact diagnosis has been established. Accurate angiography with visualization of the interrupted aortic arch and delineation of associated cardiac malformations is of prime importance for the surgical management and prognosis. Among our 36 patients with interrupted aortic arch, 27 were operated on. The operative mortality in 22 patients with associated ventricular septal defect (VSD) and persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was reduced from 43% (in seven patients seen up until 1979) to 7% (in 15 patients seen since 1980). One patient with interrupted aortic arch type C and another infant with associated truncus arteriosus were successfully corrected on day 9 and day 17 of life, respectively. In the patients with associated VSD and PDA as well as in the one patient with associated truncus arteriosus, the primary correction—direct anastomosis of the interrupted segments without prosthesis and VSD closure and in the case with truncus, the additional positioning of a valve-bearing allograft conduit from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery—has been more successful than a two-step approach with initial pulmonary artery banding.

Notes: A collagen model peptide comprising three covalently cross-linked chains (Ala-Gly-Pro)8 with a stable triple-helix conformation was utilized as the constant part of elongated model peptides of different composition. The tripeptides Gly-Pro-Hyp, Gly-Pro-Ala, Gly-Pro-Pro, Gly-Pro-Ser, Gly-Ala-Hyp, Gly-Phe-Hyp, Gly-Glu-Hyp, Gly-Ala-Lys, and Gly-Pro-Phe were coupled at the N-terminal to the cross-linked peptide. The transition temperatures determined by CD measurements are higher for the peptides containing the Gly-X-Hyp sequences followed by those with the Gly-Pro-Y sequences. In experiments with combinations of two different tripeptides coupled to the constant part of the cross-linked model peptides higher transition temperatures were observed if the sequence of helix-promoting tripeptides was not interrupted.

Notes: Linear low-density polyethylenes (LLDPES) and polypropylene (PP) have been recovered from solutions of varying initial polymer concentration. Melts of these polymers show significant reductions in viscosity and elasticity, and the effects are attributed to changes in the entanglement density of the polymer. Measurements of entanglement densities have been attempted from experimental values of the apparent zero-shear melt viscosity. These indicate that solution treatments in trichlorobenzene at 135°C reduce the entanglement density more effectively in PP than in LLDPE. In all cases the observed effects are reversible by annealing at elevated temperatures. Analytic data point to entanglement changes as the true origin of changes in viscoelastic properties, since solution treatments produce no changes in molecular weights and weight distributions, and the samples tested are free of solvent residues.

Notes: New procedures have been developed to study the mechanism and kinetics of the crosslinking of acrylic polyols with hexa (methoxymethyl) melamine. Both the rate of gel formation and alcohol release are found to be affected by the concentration and the nature of the catalyst and to be proportional to the hydrogen ion concentration. The rate of gel formation can be modeled by using the Miller and Macosko procedure with the input consisting of the polymer composition and the rate of release of reaction products. The correlation between calculated and experimentally determined quantity of gel formed is good when the reactions are slow, but becomes poor when gel formation is rapid, suggesting that the formation of large rings is favored by rapid reaction. The rate of gel formation shows much less variation among different polymer systems than does the rate of release of reaction products from the crosslinking reaction.

Notes: The inclusion copolymerization of various vinyl monomer systems was studied in a thiourea and perhydrotriphenylene matrix while that of a disubstituted butadiene system was investigated in canals of thiourea, perhydrotriphenylene, deoxycholic acid and β-cyclodextrine. The results were compared with those obtained for the corresponding free copolymerization especially with regard to copolymer composition. In all vinyl monomer systems inclusion copolymerization leads to the same copolymer composition as is found in the free process. On the other hand, in case of the diene system, the copolymer composition of the inclusion products is remarkably different from that of the copolymers formed by the free reaction; the former is always nearly ideal statistic independent of the nature of the host. Inclusion homopolymerization can successfully be carried out with monomers where the free radical polymerization is prevented by allylic inhibition.
