    Notes: Summary An uncommon cause of progressive dysphagia may be large cervical osteophytes impinging upon the cervical esophagus. Dysphagia may be due to the mechanical mass effect of a large anterior osteophyte, trapping the esophagus opposite a fixed point such as the cricoid cartilage, or a local inflammatory reaction resulting in cricopharyngeal spasm. We report three patients with progressive dysphagia due to large anterior cervical osteophytes. All three patients were treated with anterior cervical approach with removal of the osteophytes without fusion. A review of the literature in addition to the specific case histories, video fluoroscopic and radiographic findings are presented.

    Notes: Abstract The properties of pseudo-ternary systems involving brine, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), pentanol and dodecane or hexane have been investigated. When the hydrocarbon is dodecane, the microemulsion system includes in addition to the main monophasic area a small lens inserted in an oil-rich zone. With hexane, the microemulsion domain splits into two parts, one of which consists of a narrow scythe-blade shaped area which spreads from the water top up to compositions very rich in hydrocarbon. The properties of these uncommon microemulsions were compared with those of microemulsions belonging to the main monophasic area in order to gain additional understanding of their structure. Results of experiments including electrical conductivity and viscosity measurements, electrochemical and fluorescent probe studies lead to the following conclusions: Microemulsions of the small lens of the brine/SDS/pentanol/dodecane system exhibit properties which are reminiscent of structures with at once water and oil countinuous phases. Microemulsions of the lenticular area of the brine/SDS/pentanol/ hexane system seem to undergo the same structural transitions as microemulsions of systems which present a single monophasic area: water-continuous, bicontinuous and oilcontinuous structures.

    Notes: A family of casting composites, epoxy resins with mineral fillers, having a range of electrical properties, are being developed. In such composites, the dielectric constant is controlled primarily by varying the filler material in composition and proportions. The present work reports on the mechanical properties of composites made with two types of filler, an alumina powder (XA3500 from ALCOA) and a BaTiO3/TiO2 ceramic powder (ATD-50 from Ampex). Dependence of mechanical properties on curing agents was also determined. Filler contents from 0 to 40 percent volume were used. Epoxy systems contained single epoxy resin with both amine and anhydride hardeners. Processing of the anhydride-cured systems was easier than that of the amine-based systems because of their lower viscosity and longer gel time of the former. However, the anhydride-cured systems required higher processing temperatures. Curing kinetics and molecular bonding were investigated using a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Activation energies of 11.2 kcal/mole and 12.1 kcal/mole were obtained for the curing of the amine-based and the anhydride-based composites respectively, and a small difference in the glass transition temperature was also observed. These effects can be attributed to the difference in the structure of the curing agents. The epoxy resin cured with NMA is less ductile compared with those cured with MTHPA or MHHPA due to slight chemical modification on the ring structures. This dependence of ductility on curing agent was observed in specimens with different filler contents. Although the presence of the filler materials was found to enhance the mechanical properties of the epoxy, the fracture mode in these materials is still brittle.

    Notes: Work has shown that (1) the permeability of saran film increases exponentially with increasing temperature due to activation energy, (2) permeability of saran film decreases slightly with increasing pressure-but to only a very slight extent, (3) microwave radiation does not affect permeability as long as the film is not heated during treatment, and (4) low amounts of liquid additives correlate with lower permeability. It is suggested that the barrier property of saran film can be improved without sacrificing the processing ability.
