    Notes: Abstract. We report a case of fetus-in-fetu located in the scrotal sac of a newborn male infant. Plain radiography (including specimen radiography), ultrasonography and MRI clearly demonstrated vertebral column, ribs, skull, pelvic bones, femurs and a portion of tibiae and humeri. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological examination.

    Notes: Very large-scale motions in the form of long regions of streamwise velocity fluctuation are observed in the outer layer of fully developed turbulent pipe flow over a range of Reynolds numbers. The premultiplied, one-dimensional spectrum of the streamwise velocity measured by hot-film anemometry has a bimodal distribution whose components are associated with large-scale motion and a range of smaller scales corresponding to the main turbulent motion. The characteristic wavelength of the large-scale mode increases through the logarithmic layer, and reaches a maximum value that is approximately 12–14 times the pipe radius, one order of magnitude longer than the largest reported integral length scale, and more than four to five times longer than the length of a turbulent bulge. The wavelength decreases to approximately two pipe radii at the pipe centerline. It is conjectured that the very large-scale motions result from the coherent alignment of large-scale motions in the form of turbulent bulges or packets of hairpin vortices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new method, which is particularly suitable for fabricating a uniformly thick solid- or liquid-fuel layer inside an inertial confinement fusion target, is described. The method employs a cold helium-gas-jet shower to uniformly cool a target and an intensity-graded laser illumination to create a desired thermal gradient across the target. The net result is a thermally induced fuel migration inside the target, which precisely counterbalances the gravity-induced fuel sagging, bringing about a uniform layer of fuel condensate on the target interior. This new method is significant for the following reasons: First, it allows for fabrication of both solid- and liquid-fuel layers. Second, it is a noncontact method. Third, it requires either none or very little cryogenic shielding. Fourth, it is simple to implement. Fifth, it allows for easy diagnostic access to the target. Details of the apparatus and results showing the capabilities of the method are presented.

    Notes: Field fluctuations due to dopants in a p+−n junction have been calculated and used to study the effects on the impact ionization rate with a Monte Carlo simulation. Results are plotted along the direction normal to the interface. We report that the field fluctuations have no effect on the ionization rate in the dead space and a small and spatially delayed effect in the region after the dead space even though the field shows large and rapid fluctuations. A similar "averaged-out'' effect is also shown for the average electron energy. The enhancement in the ionization rate due to the field fluctuations which Shockley expected in his pioneering research is shown to be negligibly small.

    Notes: The goal of this work is the formulation of an analytical model of optical and acoustic emission generation by laser welds. A simplified model of the visible portion of the laser weld plume is used as a basis for the prediction of optical and acoustic signals. The optical emission is calculated from the strongest helium and iron lines in the visible spectrum. The sound pressure is calculated as a function of vapor flow rate by considering the displacement of ambient air by vapor emanating from the keyhole. The model reveals that generation of visible light increases roughly in proportion to the flow rate of vapor from the plume. However, the acoustic signal is predicted to vary as the time derivative of the flow rate. Experimental measurements of visible light are found to be of the same magnitude as predicted by the model and the fluctuation of the optical and acoustic signals are found to be consistent with the hypothesis that they are both fundamentally due to vapor flow rate variations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A simple graphic method of solving the Vlasov–Poisson system associated with nonlinear eigenvalue conditions for arbitrary potential structures is presented. A general analytic formulation for nonmonotonic double layers is presented and illustrated with some particular closed form solutions. This class of double layers satisfies the time stationary Vlasov–Poisson system while requiring a Sagdeev potential, which is a double-valued function of the physical potential. It follows that any distribution function having a density representation as any integer or noninteger power series of potential can never satisfy the nonmonotonic double-layer boundary conditions. A Korteweg–de Vries-like equation is found showing a relationship among the speed of the nonmonotonic double layer, its scale length, and its degree of asymmetry.

    Notes: High pressure extrusion (13,00–40,000 psi), using a French Pressure Cell and hydraulic press, was evaluated for the degradation of potato starch. Rapid decreases in both relative and intrinsic viscosities of starch colloidal solutions (0.5–2.5%, w/v) were evident, particularly following the first extrusion. However, maximum reducing powers formed (1.15 dextrose equivalents) were negligible even after 5 consecutive extrusions of a 0.5% starch solution. The significant decreases in viscosities of starch solutions were due to depolymerization of the starch molecules into smaller fractions with little reducing power. However, the use of high pressure extrusion combined with heat (97°C) and 3N HCI significantly enhanced degradation of a 2.5% starch solution to yield 52.1 dextrose equivalents.
