Notes: The electrical conduction was investigated in styrene butadiene rubber (SBR-1502) loaded with different concentrations of fast extrusion furnace (FEF) black (70, 80, 90, and 100 phr). On the bases of Holm's model, a qualitative description for the electrical conduction through these composites was sought. The pressure coefficient K was calculated and found to be strongly dependent on the carbon black concentrations.

Notes: Studies were carried out on the grafting of butyl acrylate (BA) to amylose by the ceric ion method. After removing the homo-PBA with THF and toluene, and the ungrafted amylose with 0.5NNaOH, the PBA content of the graft copolymers was determined by acid hydrolysis with 1N HCl. The influence of reaction time on the grafting yields was determined and the largest values were: 82% for the grafting efficiency, 246% for the percent grafting, 62% for the grafted amylose, 48% for the grafted PBA, and 64% for the total conversion.

Notes: A study of the Ce(IV) ion consumption during graft polymerization of butyl acrylate with amylose was carried out. The Ce(IV) consumed was ca. 80% and the ratio of Ce(IV) to anhydroglucose units was 1/15. Poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) chains were isolated from the grafted copolymer by the perchloric acid hydrolysis method. The molecular distribution was obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the grafted chains was 276,000 and the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) was 1,320,000. The total number of grafted chains (mmol) ranged from 0.4410-3 to 8.710-3 (amylose from 0.08 g to 1.23 g). Frequency of grafting ranged from 1042 to 704.

Notes: The basic properties of polyester resin mortar have been studied. These properties included compressive strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, shrinkage, and resistance to sulfuric acid. The main variables were the polymer content, the ratio of coarse sand to filler, the method of curing, and the age. The properties of Portland cement mortar were also studied for comparison.Polyester mortar shows a higher rate of hardening, higher strength, and higher resistance to sulfuric acid than cement mortar. On the other hand, polyester mortar shows lower modulus of elasticity and higher shrinkage than cement mortar.

Notes: Hydrogels of a significant biostructural polymer (agarose) were studied turbidometrically in the course of their isothermal self-assembly. Supramolecular order was characterized by an order parameter and associated correlation length. This type of characterization, in general, may help more in the quantitative measurement of order in biostructures. The picture of processes leading to isothermal gelation appears much richer than expected, and it is probably of more general validity, as it agrees with predictions based on the statistical model of site-bond correlated percolation. At the higher temperatures a spinodal decomposition occurs well before, and possibly triggers [P. L. San Biagio, et al. (1986) Biopolymers 25, 2255-2269], the start of gelation. In this case, the spatial modulation of concentration, as well as topological features of the gel, appear to reflect those of the spinodally decomposed sol. When an upper limit is approached for the temperature of isothermal gelation, both the order parameter and the correlation length exhibit a critical-like behavior. At lower temperatures, the sequence of processes and the resulting features of the gel appear dictated by the (temperature- and concentration-dependent) interplay of spinodal decomposition and gelation processes and kinetics. The present results are believed to provide a basis for a deeper understanding of the relation between the processes of gelation and of spinodal decomposition, and between their time scales.

Notes: The adhesion of human blood platelets onto vascular catheters was studied using a specially designed perfusion chamber. Polyurethane catheters were exposed to citrated human blood for different periods (up to 20 min) and at different wall shear rates (190, 260, 330 sec-1). The rate of platelet adhesion was determined using 111In-labeled platelets, while the morphology of adhering platelets was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. A linear increase in platelet adhesion was found within the first 10 min of perfusion, after which a plateau value was reached. The number of adhering platelets did not vary significantly with the shear rates applied, which may indicate that within the range of shear rates studied, the adhesion of platelets onto the catheter surface is mainly determined by the rate of the reaction between the platelets and the material surface. Catheters coated with a conjugate of heparin and albumin showed a four- to five-fold reduction in platelet adhesion as compared to uncoated catheters. This reduction in platelet adhesion was not only due to the presence of albumin moieties at the surface but also to the presence of heparin residues in the adsorbed albumin-heparin conjugate.

Notes: Alkyd resins can be modified by insertion of an imide linkage in the alkyd backbone. In this investigation, various dibasic acid-urea condensation products were incorporated, namely, tetraphthalyl urea, tetraoxalyl urea and tetrasuccinyl urea. Such modification resulted in a considerable improvement in film performance and durability, except in case of the tetraoxalyl urea modified alkyds.
