Notes: Summary In a 45-year-old woman with severe normochromic anemia (Hb 2.8 g%) an extensive myelofibrosis and infiltration of the bone marrow with small blasts was observed histologically. Cytochemical examination of the blasts showed a negative peroxidase and a strongly positive alpha-NE reaction. PAS reaction was slightly granular positive in the cytoplasmic protuberances of the blasts and in the platelets. Marker analysis yielded no evidence of lymphatic origin of the blasts. In flow-cytometric studies of 230,000 cells a homogeneous 2c blast population could be identified. Cytogenetic analysis revealed an abnormal pseudo-diploid karyotype characterized by 2 acrocentric marker chromosomes caused by a translocation of chromosomes 8 and 14, as usually seen in Burkitt type lymphoma. Finally the reaction product of platelet-specific peroxidase could be demonstrated in the perinuclear cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum by electron microscopy. Highly elevated β-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 plasma levels were also measured. Following an ineffective treatment with daunoblastine and ARA-C, the patient died of pseudomonas aeruginosa septicemia after having received high-dose ARA-C treatment.

Notes: Summary The safety of drugs in hepatic porphyrias has largely been established by clinical experience, which is very limited in the case of antineoplastic agents. We administered three cycles of polychemotherapy consisting of daunorubicin, cytarabine and 6-thioguanine, and modified supportive care to a 33-year-old Turkish woman suffering from acute myelogenous leukemia. The urinary excretion of total porphyrins, porphobilinogen, and aminolevulinic acid was continuously monitored. Excreation of these metabolites was permanently elevated, but the values were comparatively low during cytotoxic therapy while peak values were recorded at the onset of fever during bone marrow aplasia; yet there were no clinical signs of porphyritic attacks at that time. A few potentially unsafe drugs were tolerated without an increase in porphyrin excretion. Although the susceptibility to drugs is highly variable in patients with hepatic porphyrias, the treatment of malignancy in these patients seems justified as long as porphyrin excretion under therapy is not grossly elevated over baseline values and appropriately modified supportive care is administered.

Notes: Summary High amount of N-acetyl-d-galactosamine specific lectin binding sites were detected on the canalicular membranes of human parietal cells. Our present model investigations on mice showed that the intracellular distribution of the terminal N-acetyl-d-galactosamine containing glycoprotein highly depends on the actual functional state of the parietal cells. In the normal gastric mucosa 40%–60% of parictal cells react positively after staining with horseradish peroxidase or biotin labelled Dolichos biflorus lectin. Ultrastructurally lectin binding sites occur mainly on the basolateral membrane infoldings in fed animals, while they are present exclusively on the canalicular membranes of fasting mice, suggesting that the alternative appearance of lectin binding sites on the opposite membrane areas of parietal cells is tightly coupled to their main function, to H+ secretion.

Notes: Summary By use of the indirect immunofluorescence technique the distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-like immunoreactivity (LI) has been analyzed in cervical and lumbar dorsal root ganglia of untreated and colchicine-treated rats. In addition, lumbar ganglia were examined 2 weeks after transection of the sciatic nerve. The occurrence of CGRP-positive cells in relation to ganglion cells containing substance P-, somatostatin-, galanin-, cholecystokinin (CCK)-, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)/peptide histidine isoleucin (PHI)-LI has been evaluated on consecutive sections as well as using elution-restaining and double-staining techniques. CGRP-LI was observed in many ganglion cells of all sizes ranging in diameter from 15 μm to 65 μm. Thus, this peptide occurs also in the large primary sensory neurons. In contrast to the sensory peptides described to date, CGRP-positive cells constituted up to 50% of all and 70% of the medium-sized neurons, thus being the most frequently occurring peptide in sensory neurons so far encountered. Subpulations of CGRP-positive neurons were shown to contain substance P-, somatostatin-, or galanin-LI and some CGRP-positive neurons contained both substance P- and galanin-LI. In fact, most substance P-, somatostatin- and galanin-positive cell bodies were CGRP-immunoreactive. The coexistence analysis further revealed that galanin and substance P often coexisted and that some cells contained both substance P- and somatostatin-LI, whereas no coexistence between galanin and somatostatin has as yet been seen. VIP/PHI-LI was only shown in a few cells in untreated or colchicine-treated rats. However, after transcetion of the sciatic nerve numerous VIP/PHI-positive cells were observed, some of which also contained CGRP-LI. The present results indicate that a CGRP-like peptide is present in a wide range of primary sensory neurons probably not related to specific sensory modalities. Often this peptide coexists with other biologically active peptides. Taken together these findings suggest that CGRP may have a generalized function.

Notes: Abstract We consider a class of modifications to the exponential QCD sum rules, replacing the energy variableq 2 by (q 2) k withk positive integer. As a result of this modification, (i) the relative role of the condensates on the theoretical side is changed, (ii) the integral on the phenomenological side acquires a rapidly decreasing weight function and (iii) the way of approaching infinity in theq 2 complex plane splits intok rays. We explicitly discuss the modified sum rules withk=1,k=2 andk=3 for the ρ meson and conclude that, unlike to thek=1 case, thek=2 andk=3 sum rules do not yield a satisfactory scheme for the prediction of the resonance parameters unless many higher condensates are known. We show that, for practical applications with the present knowledge of condensates, the standard exponential QCD sum rules are the most suitable ones out of the class considered.

Notes: Abstract Predictions based on axiomatic field theory are obtained from the assumption that the difference between thepp and thep $$\bar p$$ elastic scattering observed at the CERN ISR is caused by an “odderon-like” term in the scattering amplitude. A wide class of amplitudes violating the Pomeranchuk relation is considered. Contrary to common opinion, severe restrictions on the high-energy behaviour of the phase of the crossing-odd amplitude are shown to follow for the whole class. Less pronounced but still visible consequences follow for the phases of thepp andp $$\bar p$$ amplitudes separately. We derive the corresponding high-energy bounds and correlations using the general frame of analyticity, crossing symmetry and unitarity. As a special case, the maximal odderon amplitude is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The inclusive cross sections for π0 production by π− and π+ on protons have been measured with a beam momentum of 280 GeV/c using a fine grained electromagnetic calorimeter and the CERN Omega spectrometer. The transverse momentum and Feynmanx F ranges covered are 4.0〈p T 〈7.0 GeV/c and −0.45〈x F 〈0.6 respectively. The data are compared with leading order QCD calculations.

Notes: Abstract We discuss the derivative analyticity relations which were originally proposed as an alternative to dispersion relations; the dispersion integral is replaced by a tangent series of derivatives of the functionf which is, in the majority of high-energy applications, the imaginary part of a scattering amplitude. We consider three ways how to give the tangent series precise meaning. If the series converges on a real interval,f must be extensible to an entire function. Iff ∈ C∞ and the dispersion integral converges, the latter is equal to a generalized sum of the tangent series. Finally in the high-energy limit, derivative relations are valid in which the tangent series is replaced by its first term. Then the class of applicability includes the majority of physically interesting functions.
