    Notes: We report on the absolute density and the spatial distribution of silicon atoms in a SiH4-He-Ar dc glow discharge measured by the laser-induced fluorescence method. The absolute sensitivity of the fluorescence-photon-counting system was calibrated by using the same system to measure Rayleigh scattering by Ar gas in the discharge chamber. The fluorescence quantum efficiency and the polarization degree of emitted light were measured to confirm the absence of excited-state quenching induced by collisions with the buffer-gas atoms. The measured spatial distribution profile of the ground-state silicon atoms is compared with that of the excited-state atoms.

    Notes: Serum levels of squamous cell carcinoma-related antigen (SCC-RAG) were measured in five cases of pemphigus, five cases of bullous pemphigoid and 18 cases of benign and malignant dermatoses other than SCC. The SCC-RAG titres were significantly raised in four of five patients with pemphigus, while they remained within the normal range in the other dermatoses except in one case. In three pemphigus cases in whom serial measurements were made, SCC- RAG levels seemed to be related to disease activity. The SCC-RAG levels in blister fluids were much higher than those in serum, suggesting that the skin is a major source of serum SCC- RAG.These results show that SCC-RAG is increased not only in SCC, but also in some cases of pemphigus, and suggest that pemphigus antibodies may cause the production or release of SCC-RAG.

    Notes: Summary Histochemical investigations were carried out on skeletal muscle biopsies from ten patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia with ragged-red fibers (RRF). In addition to the RRF, mild myopathic change consisting of variation in size of both type 1 and 2 fibers was seen in all patients, as well as neuropathic change in eight. Scattered fibers with absent cytochromec oxidase (CCO) activity (focal deficiency) were seen in all patients. In serial sections, CCO deficiency did not always occupy the entire length of a fiber but was localized segmentally to regions measuring several hundred micrometers in lenghth, suggesting the heterogeneity of CCO activity even in the same fiber.

    Notes: Summary By means of immunoreactivity for spot 35 protein, a novel cerebellar Purkinje cell-specific protein, the regional heterogeneity among non-pigmented ciliary epithelial cells of rats was demonstrated with reference to the antero-posterior and crest-valley directions of individual ciliary epithelial folds in immature and mature eyes. The functional significance of the occurrence of the spot 35 immunoreactivity in the posterior portion of the ciliary epithelium is briefly discussed in relation to the formation of the aqueous humor.

    Notes: Abstract Effects of YM-14673 (Nα-[{(S)-4-oxo-2-azetidinyl}-carbonyl]-l-histidyl-l-prolinamide dihydrate), a new TRH derivative, on reserpine-induced behavioural and electroencephalographic changes were observed in comparison with those of TRH. YM-14673 antagonized reserpine-induced hypothermia and decrease in convulsion threshold in mice. The number of PGO waves recorded from the lateral geniculate body was decreased by administration of YM-14673 in reserpinized cats. The anti-reserpine activity of intravenous YM-14673 was about 8–20 times more potent than that of TRH. In inhibiting reserpine-induced hypothermia, the oral ED2°C relative to IV ED2°C as an indirect indication of absorption rate of the drugs was 15 for both YM-14673 and TRH. These results suggest that YM-14673 possesses more potent facilitatory effects on the central monoamine systems than TRH.

    Notes: We characterized human umbilical vein (HUV) endothelial cells as to cell growth and prostacyclin production to get a better understanding of the properties of endothelial cells. Endothelial cell growth supplement (ECGS) and basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF) stimulated HUV endothelial cell growth. Heparin further enhanced the cell growth stimulated by ECGS, but not the cell growth stimulated by FGF or in the absence of these growth factors. In the presence of ECGS, the prostacyclin-producing capacity of the cells was inhibited by heparin. However, in the presence of FGF of in the absence of growth factors, heparin did not inhibit prostacyclin production. Therefore, it is likely that there is a specific correlation between heparin and growth factors for endothelial cells in the blood vessel to maintain nonthrombogenicity properly. Heparin-treated cultures may not be suitable for some examinations of prostacyclin production by vascular endothelial cells.
