Notes: The effectiveness of macrogol and talcum base formulations of a new multi-insect repellent N, N-diethyl phenyl acetamide (DEPA) was studied against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the laboratory. The efficacy was compared with widely used repellent in India, viz. Dimethylphthalate. Twenty-five per cent DEPA incorporated macrogol ointment and talcum base formulation offered more than 8 h and 6 h protection, as compared to DMP for 3 h and 1 h 30 min, respectively. The ointment was found to be stable as more than 99% DEPA was recovered by gas liquid chromatography after 6 months of storage at room temperature.

Notes: Summary Chloroethylnitrosoureas have been used widely to treat human and experimental animal tumors. We have earlier observed that 〉90% of the mice transplanted with syngeneic tumors survive following treatment with nitrosoureas such as 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) and furthermore, they resist subsequent challenge with the same tumor. The present investigation was initiated to determine the mechanism by which BCNU brings about this effect. Treatment of tumor cell targets in vivo or in vitro with BCNU, increased their susceptibility to macrophage (MØ)-mediated cytotoxicity as measured in a direct cytotoxicity assay or in an antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) assay. In contrast, the antitumor cytotoxicity caused by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), natural killer (NK) cells, or lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells, was not altered following BCNU treatment of tumor targets. Studies were also conducted to investigate the direct effect of BCNU in vivo on various cytotoxic effector cells. For this purpose, MØ, NK, LAK, and CTL activities from BCNU-treated-tumor-bearing mice were screened for cytotoxicity against untreated tumor targets in vitro. It was observed that tumor-specific CTL and LAK cell activity increased in BCNU-treated tumor-bearing mice when compared to untreated controls while the cytotoxic potential of NK cells and MØs was not altered. The present study suggests that antitumor drugs such as BCNU are not only tumoricidal but also selectively act in a variety of ways at both the effector and target cell level, leading to overall enhanced antitumor immunity and high rate of cures from the syngeneic tumor challenge.

Notes: Abstract The effect of small concentrations of zirconium on the cyclic oxidation behavior of Fe-15Cr-4Al was investigated at 1300°C. The zirconium concentrations studied were 0.2, 0.55, and 1 wt.%. Each cycle consisted of a 1-hr isothermal period followed by 30-min cooling of the sample in air. Nodule formation was observed in higher zirconium-containing alloys, 0.55% and 1% zirconium, and the base alloy. The nodules formed at the corners and edges of the specimen and grew with increasing number of cycles. EDAX and line scans of cross section of oxidized samples demonstrated that the nodules were composed of iron oxides. Suggestions are given regarding the mode of nodule formation. Results show that additions of 0.2% zirconium and 1% yttrium to the base alloy suppress the nodule formation and provide the best resistance to cyclic oxidation.

Notes: Abstract In the present work rms angular momenta have been deduced for the fission fragments corresponding to131Tem,g and133Tem,g in232Th(α 40 MeV,f) and238U(α 40 MeV,f) systems from the radiochemically determined independent isomeric yield ratios and statistical model based analysis. For131Te and133Te the rms angular momenta deduced are 5.9±1.0 and 7.9±1.2 ħ respectively in232Th(α 40 MeV,f) and 7.2±0.6 and 8.0±0.8 ħ respectively in238U(α 40 MeV,f). Comparison of the present data with the literature data for these fragments in the same compound nuclei236U* and242Pu* at lower excitation energies shows increase in the fragment angular momentum with increasing excitation energy and angular momenta of the fissioning nuclei. Fragment angular momentum deduced theoretically for asymmetric and deformed fragments on the basis of thermal equilibration of the collective rotational degrees e.g., rigid rotation, wriggling, tilting, bending and twisting modes considering the effect of multichance fission, are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Notes: Abstract In the present work angular momenta of the fragments corresponding to132Im,g have been deduced from the radiochemically determined independent isomeric yield ratios and statistical model based analysis in neutron induced fission of235U,239Pu and245Cm and spontaneous fission of252Cf. These data along with similar data on134I, reported earlier from this laboratory, bring out the effects of deformed 66n and spherical 82n shells on fragment angular momentum showing also an inverse correlation of the latter with elemental yields. Quantitative estimates of fragment scission point deformation and the coefficient of change of fragment angular momentum with kinetic/excitation energy have been deduced and are seen to be in good agreement with the expected theoretical estimates.
