Notes: : A deterministic, separable, linear algorithm is presented for maximizing aggregate hydropower production. The method is iterative and amenable to solution using standard LP software. The utility of the technique is demonstrated using several test applications involving a hypothetical single-purpose hydropower reservoir and a monthly increment 20-year flow record from the Gunpowder River in Maryland. The separable linearized forms solved quickly using MPSX on a variety of IBM hardware: 3090-400 VF, 3084 QX, dual processor 4381-3, and an AT/370 personal computer. For comparison purposes, the original nonlinear nonseparable version of the model was also solved using MINOS. This yielded a value of aggregate hydropower marginally higher than that using MPSX. The separable, linearized methodology proved to be a useful and an efficient means of generating good starting points for MINOS. The use of these warm starts effected substantial reductions in MINOS execution times.

Notes: Abstract An application of expert hierarchical control is described in this paper. The control is implemented in a two-level configuration, where the lower layer performs direct regulation control and the upper layer performs supervisory functions. In the regulation layer, a rule-based controller performs the regulation task, where the controller is constructed upon causal relations between subsystems. The control action is inferred from the measurement of both controlled and noncontrolled variables. In the supervisory layer, the main function is a fault diagnosis system which diagnoses faults on-line. The diagnosis is based upon reasoning from the structure of the system and the functions of its components, and efficient diagnosis is achieved by dividing the system into several subsystems. The overall technique has been successfully implemented on a pilot scale mixing process under on-line computer control.

Notes: Abstract A 3.4-kilobase genomic DNA fragment from Pisum sativum L. containing the LegA gene, which encodes a major legumin storage protein, was transferred to Nicotiana plumbaginifolia using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain containing the Bin 19 binary vector system. Northern hybridisation analysis of legA-transformed plants demonstrated that legumin-specific RNA was present in developing seeds but not in developing leaves. Legumin protein was immunologically detected in the mature seeds of legA-transformed plants, and was present as the correct-size protein composed of disulphide-bonded polypeptides. It is concluded that the transferred pea genomic fragment contains all the information necessary for seed-specific expression of the legA gene, and for correct processing of the primary transcript and the precursor legumin protein.
