Notes: Abstract: Sequential 31P and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra were measured for neonatal piglets (n = 7) to determine the relationship between brain intracellular pH (pHi), lactate, and phosphorylated energy metabolites during partial ischemia. Simultaneous determinations of arterial and cerebral venous blood gases, pH, O2 content, and plasma concentrations of glucose and lactate were also made. Ischemia, induced by bilateral carotid artery ligation plus hemorrhagic hypotension for 35 min, resulted in variable reductions in ATP, phosphocreatine, and increases in Pi, H+, and lactate relative to control levels. In four piglets, whose arterial blood glucose rose above control, brain lactate exceeded 20 μmol g−1 with corresponding decreases in pHi of 〉0.7 units compared to control levels. The extents of brain acidosis and lactosis showed a strong linear correlation with each other (r= 0.94). Maximal changes in brain lactate, pHi, and ATP at the end of ischemia showed significant positive linear correlations with the control levels of arterial blood glucose, but did not correlate with arterial glucose or arterial cerebral-venous glucose difference values during ischemia. The relationship between pHi and buffer base deficit was comparable to results reported for adult animals up to 20 μmol ml−1. However, in contrast to models proposed for adult brain, the continued linear relationship between pH and higher buffer base levels is most consistent with a theoretical model that assumes the presence of weak acid buffers with pKa values from 6.7 to 5.2.

Notes: : In a field study of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to Leishmania major, zymodeme Lon-4, in an endemic focus in Saudi Arabia, 80 patients in a group of 643 patients (12.44%) were found to have multiple, inflammatory, satellite papules (SP) around one or more CL lesions. The SP often appeared to erupt after commencement of antileishmanial treatment. They showed a range of morphology and pathology, and comparisons with corresponding CL lesions showed important differences. Amastigotes were seen in only one of seven biopsy specimens. Another morphologic feature, subcutaneous induration (SCI), was noted on routine palpation in 20 patients in the same patient group (3.11%). The SCI either was radiating all around the lesion and appeared as an “iceberg nodule” or was present as a “tonguelike” process proximal to the CL lesion. Amastigotes were seen in four of nine biopsy specimens of SCI. SP and SCI represent reactions to local dissemination of the parasite or its antigenic products, and as morphologic features aid in the clinical diagnosis of CL.

Notes: Field experiments were done during the rainy season of 1984–85 and 1985–86 at Harma, Qatar. A weed survey of barley fields was conducted with the primary purpose of identifying the weed vegetation present. The effects of time of hand-weeding and of application of the herbicide metoxuron on the yield and yield components of barley were studied. Removing weeds at 15,30,45 and 60 days after sowing gave yields similar to that of the clean-weeded check. Neither a critical period nor a threshold density below which no yield loss occurred were observed. Metoxuron (1,2 and 3 kg ha−1) gave good to excellent broad-leaved and grass-weed control. The use of this herbicide at the rate of 1 kg ha−1 showed considerable promise.
