    Notes: The rate of intramolecular electronic excitation energy transfer in 9,9' bifluorene has been investigated in a variety of solvents, using both time-correlated single photon counting and femtosecond fluorescence upconversion technique. The kinetics of energy transfer were determined in both cases by time dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurements. The energy transfer dynamics between fluorene moieties has been found to occur on a time scale of approximately 600 fs in different solvents and has been correlated with the T2 value calculated from the absorption linewidth and the β value obtained from jet measurements. The dihedral angle between the fluorene moieties was also calculated from the anisotropy measurement and compared with the values obtained from a solution phase NMR determination.

    Notes: We have studied in conscious unrestrained rats under basal conditions the effect of activation of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors in the paraventricular nucleus on vasopressin secretion and mean arterial blood pressure. The microinjection of oxotremorine (0.2, 2 or 20 ng), a specific muscarinic agonist, produced a substantial, dose-dependent, transient increase in the plasma vasopressin concentration. There was also a rise in mean arterial blood pressure and a bradycardia that followed the same time-course as the change in plasma vasopressin levels. The microinjection of nicotine (0.1, 1 or 10 HQ) into the paraventricular nucleus had only questionable effects on vasopressin release and mean arterial blood pressure; heart rate was unaffected. These findings suggest that muscarinic receptors may be of primary importance in the paraventricular nucleus in the Cholinergic stimulation of vasopressin release.

    Notes: Summary There is considerable evidence to suggest that there is a cholinergic link in the neural control of vasopressin release, but the precise role for this link has not been adequately demonstrated in the intact animal. We have, therefore, examined in conscious unrestrained rats the effects of central cholinergic blockade on the stimulation of vasopressin release by increased plasma osmotality (iv infusion of 2.5 M NaCl at 0.1 mg/kg body weight · min for 30 min) and by decreased blood volume (2 successive hemorrhages of 10% of blood volume each). The vasopressin responses to these stimuli were unaffected by either intracerebroventricular (icv) atropine (10 μg; muscarinic blockade) or icv hexamethonium (10 μg; nicotinic blockade) in doses which block the vasopressin responses to icv cholinergic agonists. The implications of these findings are discussed.
