    Notes: Eight cases of adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL) with cutaneous involvement were studied. The clinical and histological features of these cases were recorded and immunohisto-chemistry carried out using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to T-cell differentiation antigens. Patients with ATLL showed distinct differences from patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary syndrome (SS). Patients tended to have papulonodular and purpuric skin eruptions with pleomorphic lymphoid infiltrates, and often a degree of vasculitis. There was a high level of expression of activated T-cell antigens, CD25, CD30, CD38, T9 and Leu 8.

    Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody (Ted-R-1) to the keratohyalin granules (KHGs) of the newborn rat epidermis was developed by immunizing mice with a pH 4.7 hematoxylin-stainable fraction of the extract in a 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.3, containing 10 μ/ml phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) from the newborn rat whole epidermis. Using an indirect immunofluorescence technique, Ted-R-1 was located in two places: (a) the KHGs and (b) the cell membrane region of the stratum corneum. Under immunoelectron microscopy, the antigenic materials were located at the periphery of the KHGs. Immunoblotting analyses of the antigenic pH 4.7 fraction, the Tris-HCl extract from the stratum corneum, and the Tris-8M urea extract from freeze-dried whole skin demonstrated that there were 55 kd, 43 kd, and 78 kd polypeptides, respectively, with which Ted-R-1 reacts. No possitive spot was seen in the dermal extract. The major amino acids of the 55 kd protein were glycine (24.4%), serine (17.3%), glutamic acid (14.1%), and alanine (7.7%), while the histidine residue was only 3.1%. On the basis of its amino acid composition, the 55 kd protein is the third component of KHGs — in addition to histidine-rich and cystinerich proteins.

    Notes: Abstract Spectral absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by natural phytoplankton and photosynthetic rates under blue, green, red and white lights with various intensities were determined in the thermally stratified open sea off Shikoku Island, Japan, between 9 June and 8 July 1982. Two characteristic phytoplankton populations, sun- and shade-types, were recognized above and below the 10% light depth, respectively, from photosynthetic responses. The shade-type is characterized by a small photosynthesis maximum at low optimum light intensity, severe photo-inhibition and steep initial slope of photosynthetic rate in comparison with the sun-type. Photosynthetic rates of both types were highest in blue light among three other lights at a given intensity; this “effective use of blue light” is expected to be advantageous mostly for the shade-type because the blue light field predominated at greater depths. Together with these photosynthetic responses and the blue light environment, the subsurface population was expected to maintain effective utilization of light in its habitat. An increase of cell pigment concentration in a low-light environment presumably induced phytoplankton to harvest light energy effectively. Quantum yields determined varied between 0.02 to 0.12 mole C E-1, although no obvious difference was noticed in different light sources and growth habitats.

    Notes: Summary We report our methods for using the surgical microscope to decompress the optic nerve intranasally and our results in five cases with optic nerve trauma, including a 7-year-old girl. Decompression seemed necessary in cases without canal fractures (four cases in the present report), since circular disturbances from edema may play a role in producing reversible visual impairments. The intranasal approach not only solved cosmetic problems associated with other techniques, but also provided better, less distorted views when compared with extranasal or transantral approaches. Microsurgery using a selfretaining retractor speculum resulted in improved visualization and reliable procedures during surgery. Since the operation does not impose a cosmetic or physical burden on patients, it can be done early when indicated to accelerate visual improvement following trauma.

    Notes: Summary To clarify the effect of the temporary decline in cerebellar function on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and gaze functions, we examined 12 normal adults under passive rotations before and after they drank alcohol at dosages of 0.43 and 0.65 g/ kg. Whereas spatial gaze fixation was maintained accurately with 0.65 g/kg administration (0.06% blood alcohol level), gaze fixation on a head-fixed target and smooth pursuit were impaired by the higher dosage of 0.43 g/kg (0.03% blood alcohol). The magnitude of the alteration in the VOR gain after drinking was correlated significantly with the VOR gain before drinking: while small values were enhanced by drinking, large values were suppressed. The present study indicates that the VOR in the dark is regulated by the balance between the amplifying and suppressing forces controlled by the cerebellum.
