Notes: At a time when hospital mortality for adult cardiac operations is continuing to fall, the combined mitral valve coronary bypass subset remains at relatively high risk. Efforts to improve results should be directed toward a more general application of mitral reconstruction in this population, tailoring the type of repair to the pathological anatomy of valve dysfunction. Other promising therapeutic measures include the liberal use of reperfusion therapy in the acute papillary muscle dysfunction group, better selection patients for operation, and perhaps operative recommendation to a greater proportion of the more stable patients that previously were treated medically. Finally increasing the general awareness of this problem should hasten the development of improved management strategies.

Notes: Dense oriented superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films having zero resistance as high as 100 K have been made using a technique in which spray deposited and pyrolyzed films are densified by either melt quenching or flux sintering. The highest Tc films were those prepared with PbO as a dopant/flux on MgO substrates. Films without lead doping prepared on both BeO and MgO substrates yielded resistive transitions of 81–83 K. For these latter films, it was demonstrated that a subsequent anneal in argon enhanced the Tc to 87 K. The films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and four-point probe resistance measurements. The critical current density of a film having a Tc of 81 K was 4000 A/cm2 at 78 K and 14 000 A/cm2 at 55K.

Notes: We have lased the new material, LiSrAlF6:Cr3+ (Cr3+:LiSAF). The single crystals were grown by the horizontal zone melting technique. The spectroscopic properties of Cr3+:LiSAF are similar to those of other low-field Cr3+-doped systems, although the emission cross section is strongly π polarized and is also somewhat larger than has been measured for other fluoride hosts. The free-running lasing wavelength of Cr3+:LiSAF is 825 nm, and the tuning range extends from at least 780 to 920 nm. Using Kr laser pumping, we obtained slope efficiencies of 36% and 14% by utilizing output couplings of 4.8% and 0.8%, respectively. On the basis of these results, the extrapolated maximum efficiency of 53% is determined, to be compared to the quantum defect-limited value of 78%. It is concluded that a moderate level of excited state absorption (ESA) loss is responsible for the reduced efficiency of the Cr3+:LiSAF system. This contrasts with the related results previously obtained for LiCaAlF6:Cr3+, where it was concluded that the effects of ESA were negligible [IEEE J. Quantum Electron. QE-24, 2243 (1988)].

Notes: Abstract For the 1983 nesting season, Forster's tern (Sterna forsteri) reproductive success was significantly impaired on organochlorine contaminated Green Bay, Lake Michigan compared to a relatively uncontaminated inland location at Lake Poygan, Wisconsin. Compared with tern eggs from Lake Poygan, eggs from Green Bay had significantly higher median concentrations of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), other polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), total (three congeners) non-ortho, ortho' PCBs, five individual PCB congeners known to induce aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) and several other organochlorine contaminants. Conversions of analytical concentrations of TCDD and PCB congeners based on relative AHH induction potencies allowed for estimation of total 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents. Two PCB congeners, 2,3,3′,4,4′- and 3,3′,4,4′,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PeCB) accounted for more than 90% of the median estimated TCDD equivalents at both Green Bay and Lake Poygan. The median estimated TCDD equivalents were almost 11-fold higher in tern eggs from Green Bay than in eggs from Lake Poygan (2175 and 201 pg/g). The hatching success of Green Bay sibling eggs from nests where eggs were collected for contaminant analyses was 75% lower at Green Bay than at Lake Poygan. Hatchability of eggs taken from other nests and artificially incubated was about 50% lower for Green Bay than for Lake Poygan. Among hatchlings from laboratory incubation, those from Green Bay weighed approximately 20% less and had a mean liver weight to body weight ratio 26% greater than those from Lake Poygan. In both field and laboratory, mean minimum incubation periods were significantly longer for eggs from Green Bay compared to Lake Poygan (8.25 and 4.58 days, respectively). Mean minimum incubation time for Green Bay eggs in the field was 4.37 days longer than in the laboratory. Hatchability was greatly improved when Green Bay eggs were incubated by Lake Poygan adults in an egg-exchange experiment, but was sharply decreased in Lake Poygan eggs incubated in Green Bay nests. Nest abandonment and egg disappearance were substantial at Green Bay but nil at Lake Poygan. Thus, not only factors intrinsic to the egg, but also extrinsic factors (parental attentiveness), impaired reproductive outcome at Green Bay. The epidemiological evidence from this study strongly suggested that contaminants were a causal factor. AHH-active PCB congeners (intrinsic effects) and PCBs in general (extrinsic effects) appeared to be the only contaminants at the concentrations measured in eggs, capable of producing the effects that were observed at Green Bay.

Notes: Summary The object of this study was to determine whether leukocytosis would occur in response to eccentric exercise, to concentric exercise, and/or to possible increases in serum corticol levels. Eight men performed 2 bouts of exercise at 46% $$\dot V_{o_{2max} } $$ for 40 min. Subjects initially walked up a 10% grade (UW); 2 weeks later they jogged down a 10% grade (DJ), a form of eccentric exercise known to induce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Venous blood samples were drawn before and after each exercise bout (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, and 5 h). Total and differential WBCc and serum cortisol levels were assessed. Results were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (2 × 11). Subjects experienced severe DOMS after DJ. There was a significant difference in TWBCc (p〈0.0001) between UW and DJ. Post-hoc testing revealed no significant increase over baseline values for UW; after DJ there was a 46% increase over baseline values (p〈0.05) initially seen at 1.0 h. These increases in TWBCc were predominantly a reflection of increases in neutrophils which were significant (p〈0.0001) when compared to baseline values at 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 h (∼60%). No significant neutrophil increases were seen after UW. Cortisol levels were similar for both groups pre-exercise (UW=367.1±38.6, DJ=320.2±44.16 mnol · L−1 x±SE) and decreased similarly for both groups after exercise, and thus were not related to the post-exercise neutrophilia. In conclusion, the neutrophilia seen after the DJ appeared to be a response to differences in the exercise, not plasma cortisol levels. Thus a bout of eccentric exercise appears to induce a significant post-exercise increase in neutrophils seen between 1.0 and 2.0 h after the termination of exercise.
