Notes: In order to study the rotational motion of a vortex ring or the locomotion of bacteria, which propel their cells by rotating their long curved filaments called flagella, the low-Reynolds-number flow resulting from the rotation of a torus is studied. The velocity field is obtained by distributing uniform rotlets along a circle with the rotlet directions tangent to the circle. It is found that the effect of curvature of this ring distribution of uniform rotlets is to displace this rotlet ring from the center of the cross section toward the outside of the torus in the normal direction. The net force exerted on the surrounding fluid by the rotational torus is zero. The net torque acting on the fluid is also zero.

Notes: 1. The effects of a high cholesterol diet on urinary albumin excretion were examined in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats over 36 weeks.2. Cholesterol feeding resulted in an increase in total-cholesterol and a decrease in HDL-cholesterol without influencing triglyceride levels in both strains.3. Urinary albumin excretion was significantly elevated in cholesterol-fed SHR and WKY rats.4. These results suggest that hyperlipidaemia may be important in acceleration of experimental nephropathy.

Notes: Summary This study has explored the temporal relationship between apoprotein(a), blood pressure and albuminuria over a mean interval of 11 years in a cohort of 107 diabetic patients of whom 26 (14 Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent), 12 Type 1 (insulin-dependent) had progressively increasing albuminuria (‘progressors’). In Type 2 diabetic patients, no significant differences were noted for HbA1, blood pressure, creatinine clearance or serum lipids between progressors and non-progressors. In Type 1 diabetic patients, final systolic and diastolic blood pressures were higher in progressors compared with non-progressors and progressors showed impairment of renal function in association with a rise in blood pressure at the macroalbuminuric stage. Initial apoprotein(a) levels were similar in progressors and non-progressors of either diabetes type. Apoprotein(a) levels increased exponentially with time in 12 of 14 Type 2 progressors but only in 5 of 12 Type 1 progressors (p〈0.01). In Type 2 diabetic patients, the annual increase in apoprotein(a) levels was 9.1±2.4%, which was significantly greater than in non-progressors, 2.0±1.2% (p〈0.01) and also exceeded the rates of increase of apoprotein(a) in progressors with Type 1 diabetes, 4.0±1.4%, (p〈0.05). Apoprotein(a) levels correlated significantly with albuminuria in 8 of 14 Type 2 progressors but only in 3 of 12 Type 1 progressors (p〈0.05). The rate of increase of apoprotein(a) levels was not related to mean HbA1, creatinine or creatinine clearance levels, or to albuminuria. The rate of rise of apoprotein(a) was not influenced by initial apoprotein(a) levels, suggesting that specific apoprotein(a) isoforms do not influence albuminuria-related increases in apoprotein(a). The data are consistent with the hypothesis that apoprotein(a) levels increase in response to albuminuria and may be part of a self-perpetuating process. This study also suggests that increases in apoprotein(a) levels commence during the microalbuminuria stage in diabetic patients, which is earlier than has been documented in non-diabetic proteinuria.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of the oxidation of glutathione by diaquatetrakis(2,2′-bipyridine)-μ-oxo diruthenium(III) ion in aqueous HClO4 have been investigated. The reaction obeys the empirical rate law:-2d[oxidant]/dt = k[oxidant][reductant]/[H+] where k = 7.42 ± 0.40 × 10-3 s-1 at 25.5 °C, [H+] = 0.005–0.05 M and I = 1.0 M (LiClO4). Free radicals are important in the reaction and a mechanism consistent with the experimental results has been postulated.

Notes: Abstract The structure of polytene chromosomes has been observed by conventional scanning electron microscopy and also with a high resolution ‘in lens’ field emission instrument. Surface imaging with secondary electron emission has characterized condensed chromatin and regions known for their RNA synthetic potential (nucleoli, Balbiani rings and puffs). In DNA-rich bands pairing of chromatids appears so perfect that individual chromomeres cannot be visualized as discrete units. In the interbands only chromatid bundles appear as elements, but not individual chromatids. High resolution scanning electron microscopy allows resolution at the nucleosome level. Improved localization of chromosomal structures is demonstrated, as in the case of the proposed separation of the prepupal ‘Balbiani ring 1’. Surface images of the RNA synthetic centres of the salivary gland cell are presented. Transcripts of the Balbiani ring template can be observed in the condensed and gradually unfolded state, allowing measurement of unit ribonucleoparticles. The surfaces of puffs have been visualized and are characterized by multiple supercoiled loop structures, which are described according to size, conformation and distribution.
