Notes: The specific heats of the ferromagnetic compounds ErNi, GdNi, and HoNi were measured by means of the adiabatic method in the temperature range 2.2–100 K. The specific heats for these samples showed anomalies corresponding to the magnetic orders. For the result of ErNi above Tc we could analyze by Cv=γT+αT3. The electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the Debye temperature θD were estimated to be 90 mJ/mol K2 and 130 K, respectively. The magnetic entropy was discussed on the basis of the energy-level splitting due to the crystalline field.

Notes: Summary Biological activity of enantiomerically pure juvenile hormones was assayed by topical application on allatectomizedBombyx fourth instar larvae. JHs tested were (10R)-JH I [methyl (2E,6E,10R,11S)-10,11-epoxy-3,11-dimethyl-7-ethyl-2,6-tridecadienoate], (10S)-JH I [methyl (2E, 6E, 10S, 11R)-10,11-epoxy-3,11-dimethyl-7-ethyl-2,6-tridecadienoate], (10R)-JH III [methyl (2E,6E,10R)-10,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6-dodecadienoate] and (10S)-JH III [methyl (2E,6E,10S)-10,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6-dodecadienoate]. Among these compounds, natural (10R)-JH I was most active and the dose needed to induce 50% larval molting was 0.04 μg/larva; it was approximately 12,000 times more active than unnatural (10S)-JH I. Though natural (10R)-JH III showed slight biological activity, it was only one three-thousandth of that of (10R)-JH I. Unnatural (10S)-JH III exhibited no biological activity at the levels assayed.

Notes: Abstract A 9-year-old boy with a rare combination of multiple coronary artery fistulas and congenital shunt between the portal and hepatic veins (portal-systemic shunt) is presented. The most likely pathogenesis for the portal-systemic shunt in this case was persistence of the ductus venosus as a bypass tract of the portal vein. This shunt is considered as one cause of cardiomegaly and dilatation of the hepatic vein in this case, and careful follow-up is mandatory because this shunt could induce, portal-systemic encephalopathy.

Notes: Abstract Specific binding sites for atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in the choroid plexus of rats with induced or congenital hydrocephalus were examined using in vitro quantitative receptor autoradiographic methods. The number of125I-ANP binding sites in the choroid plexus of rats with kaolin-induced hydrocephalus was significantly higher as compared to findings in the control rats, whereas no differences in the binding affinity were observed 3 days and 3 weeks after the intracisternal injection of kaolin. Conversely, rats with congenital hydrocephalus (LEW-HYR and HTX rats) had a small number of binding sites for125I-ANP in the choroid plexus, as compared to findings in the control rats. These alterations may relate to the pathophysiology of hydrocephalus. The possibility that atrial natriuretic peptide may be involved in the regulation of cerebrospinal fluid production in the choroid plexus must be considered.

Notes: Abstract Two step interpretation of negative binomial multiplicity distribution as a compound of binomial cluster production and negative binomial like cluster decay distribution is proposed. In this model we can expect the average multiplicity for the cluster production increases with increasing energy, different from a compound Poisson-Logarithmic distribution in [4, 5].

Notes: Abstract Antennal and behavioral responses of the rust-red grain beetle,Cryptolestes ferrugineus, and the flat grain beetle,C. pusillus, to synthetic samples of the macrocyclic lactones reported to comprise their aggregation pheromones were investigated. Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings were obtained successfully from both species for the first time. Females of both species showed larger EAGs than males. The EAGs ofC. ferrugineus showed a high degree of specificity for conspecific aggregation pheromone components;C. pusillus showed much less specificity. Behavioral tests were conducted using two-choice pitfall bioassays. Separation of the results into the two effects of activity stimulation and direction finding showed that both effects contributed to the overall response, although sometimes to different extents. The strain ofC. pusillus studied responded equally well to both components of its pheromone, whereas it had been reported previously that only one was active, the other acting as a Synergist and eliciting no response when tested alone. With both species, behavioral response was elicited with a single lactone, suggesting that it might not be necessary to use both components for field use. Particularly surprising was thatC. pusillus showed a greater response to the pheromone components ofC. ferrugineus than to its own. Aeration of the two species and thermal desorption of the collected volatiles confirmed production of the expected lactones, and aeration of authentic lactones showed that the response was not due to the C.ferrugineus pheromone components being markedly more volatile. This response, which seems to be an actual preference, is the first to be discovered among the cucujid beetles and encourages optimism that a practical lure for various species may not need to be as complex as originally feared.

Notes: A method for simulating three-dimensional steady-state deformation in shape rolling with grooved rolls by the rigid-plastic finite element method is proposed. For the three-dimensional element mesh, contact of the nodal points with the roll surface and detachment from the surface are judged in each step of calculation. The boundary conditions of metal flow along the curved roll surface and of friction between the roll and the workpiece are dealt with at each node over the interface. Complex steady-state deformation in shape rolling is simulated by using the non-steady-state scheme and the remeshing technique. As examples of simulation, rolling processes of bars and beams with grooved rolls are chosen. The deforming shape, the rolling torque, the roll separating force and the distributions of stress and strain in the workpiece are computed.
