    Notes: Abstract. The susceptibility of sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria (Pallas), a potential candidate for commercial mariculture, to the devastating salmonid pathogen Renibacterium salmoninarum (Rs) and the pathology of the infection were investigated. Sablefish became moribund or died of apparently uncomplicated infections of Rs within 50-71 days following intrapcritoncal inoculation of the pathogen and pure cultures of Rs were re-isolated from some affected individuals. At least one sablefish carried the pathogen up to 165 days post-inoculation when the experiment was terminated. The pathology of the Rs infection in this strictly marine fish is described and the implication of the findings to the operation of salmon marinefarms is discussed.

    Notes: All basaltic lava flows of the Albuquerque Volcanoes (lat.: 35.2°N, long.: 253.2°E), Albuquerque-Belen Basin, New Mexico, record a short excursion/polarity episode. K-Ar isotopic age determinations (weighted average: 155 ± 47 ka) and evaluation of soil profiles on flow surfaces suggest the late Pleistocene (circa between 250 and 80 ka) as the time of extrusion. Results from 63 sites in a minimum of eight flows yield a mean direction of D= 101.1°, I=−36.1°, α95= 1.2° (α195= 0.7, α295= 1.2), k= 2219 (N= 8 flows) and a corresponding virtual geomagnetic pole position (VGP) of 354.1°E, 20.2°S, dp= 0.8°, dm= 1.4° (A195= 0.295, = 1.4), and VGP angular standard deviation (ASD) = 1.8°. the unusual magnetization in flows of the Albuquerque Volcanoes is carried by fine-grained [single-domain (SD) and/or pseudo-single-domain (PSD)] low-Ti magnetite and is apparently not a function of complex sub-solidus alteration of magnetic phases. Underlying baked soils contain a relatively low coercivity magnetization with directions comprising two groups. One is roughly antipodal to the lava remanence; the other intermediate between the lava remanence and present field direction. Because all flows yield statistically indistinguishable directions, a field directional path clearly cannot be defined. At the precision level of our age determinations, the Albuquerque feature may correlate with other short polarity episodes or excursions of late Pleistocene age (e.g., Blake or Jamaica). Though characteristically limited in directional morphology, well-dated polarity episodes (i.e. sub-chrons) and excursions recorded in volcanic rocks may provide information on the frequency of significant dynamo instabilities.

    Notes: . Beef patties were extended at levels of 10, 20, and 30% of the uncooked weight with a slurry of defatted corn germ protein (CGP) and heated by microwave. Extended patties had lower heating losses and higher yields than control patties. Incorporation of CGP in beef patties lowered protein and fat contents, increased moisture contents, increased water and fat retention, decreased cohesiveness of beef patties, but did not affect hardness. Addition of CGP affected sensory characteristics: meaty aroma and flavor decreased with an increase from 10 to 30% CGP. Corn germ protein is recommended as an extender in coarsely ground meats.

    Notes: Summary Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) specific for the hemagglutinin (HA) of the H3 subtype of influenza A virus were grouped according to their inability to bind to particular MAb-selected neutralization escape mutants of the virus having an amino acid substitution in one of the five postulated antigenic sites on the molecule. Additional residues critical to the binding of the MAbs were deduced from their patterns of reactivity with a panel of field strains and receptor mutants of the H3 subtype. The relationship of these residues to the actual epitopes recognized by the MAbs was inferred from their location on the three-dimensional structure of the HA molecule. In this way it was generally possible to identify a number of residues that are critical to the integrity of the epitope recognized by each of the MAbs examined. It was found that: (1) Several of these epitopes appear to be discontinuous and some may depend on residues contributed by more than one monomer. For example, residue 205, in the interface between monomers of the HA, was found to affect the integrity of the epitopes for several MAbs, possibly by stabilizing the conformation of residues around the receptor-binding pocket and/or in site B on the adjacent monomer. The activity of these particular MAbs was greatly decreased if the virus was exposed to pH 5. (2) All the MAbs tested neutralized viral infectivity and inhibited hemagglutination, although the single MAb directed to site C, which is the most distant from the receptor-binding site, was the least efficient. (3) Hemagglutination inhibition, and particularly neutralization tests, were more discriminating than ELISA in discerning subtle differences between the corresponding epitopes recognized by MAbs on different field strains. (4) Efficiency of neutralization of infectivity did not correlate consistently with hemagglutination inhibiting efficiency; MAbs postulated to bind to epitopes close to the receptor-binding pocket were very efficient at inhibiting hemagglutination, whereas neutralization efficiency tended to be more influenced by the affinity of binding of the MAb. (5) A MAb binding to any particular epitope could affect the binding of a second MAb directed to an epitope within the same or even a different antigenic site. The observed effect was most commonly inhibition of binding, which was not always reciprocal; enhancement of binding was also observed with certain combinations of MAbs. The relative affinity of the MAbs, in addition to steric constraints, were shown to be important factors in the ability to compete for interaction with HA.

    Notes: Abstract 57Fe Mössbauer measurements have been used to determine the iron phases resulting from weathering of arsenopyrite ore from an abandoned gold mine stockpile. The principal product is the basic ferric arsenate, pharmacosiderite, with smaller amounts of scorodite, ferrihydrite and goethite and some untransformed pyrite and clay minerals. The broadened low temperature spectra of pharmacosiderite suggest that the onset of magnetic ordering is hampered by disorder in the crystal structure.

    Notes: Single crystal MgO specimens having low load Vickers indentations were thinned in an ion milling machine employing a single ion gun, and their characteristics were investigated with optical microscopy and high voltage electron microscopy (HVEM). It was found that the state of cleanliness of the specimen chamber of the ion milling machine had a very marked influence on the quality of the thinned specimens. If the specimen chamber was not well cleaned before ion milling a fresh specimen, the latter tended to show amorphisation due to the deposition on the specimen of the debris left in the chamber from the previously ion-milled specimens. Such observations were made from MgO specimens ion milled in several different types of commercial ion milling machine employing a single gun. It is proposed that to obtain good-quality ion milled TEM specimens, it is important to clean the specimen chamber thoroughly prior to milling.
