Notes: Solitons of different wavelengths are found to exhibit substantial spectral and temporal changes when collisions are centered in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. By using two soliton pulse trains, with ∼70-ps-wide pulses, spectrally separated by 1.8 A(ring), and 106 km of non-dispersion-shifted fiber, we observe a spectral and temporal shift of as much as 0.35 A(ring) and 55 ps, respectively, for each soliton. Both soliton wavelengths shift the same amount, but in opposite directions and remain undisturbed in terms of shape and amplitude after the collision. This shift may impose limitations on multiple wavelength soliton based communication systems utilizing fiber amplifiers.

Notes: We report the signal saturation behavior of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier pumped at 975 nm. We have characterized the output saturation powers as a function of fiber length and observed that the output saturation powers peak at an optimum length close to the optimum length for small signal gain. The output saturation power is found to be higher at a signal wavelength of 1.555 μm than at 1.532 μm.

Notes: In this paper, the direct observation of wake-field self-focusing of an electron beam in plasma is reported. The dynamics of beam self-pinching and the fast collisionless evolution of a Bennett-like, near-equilibrium profile are examined theoretically and computationally. The experimental results are compared to predictions of the analysis and discussed in the context of application to the plasma lens and the plasma wake-field accelerator.

Notes: We present new evidence that two electron traps observed in polycrystalline zinc oxide can be associated with complex intrinsic defects. One deep level, E1, can be assigned to an oxygen vacancy. The second deep level, E2, could consist of a cluster-type defect associated with oxygen vacancies. The two traps were characterized using deep-level transient spectroscopy. The energies of these traps are 0.15 and 0.24 eV, the capture cross sections are 4×10−18 and 1×10−17 cm2, and the emission rates at 300 K are 2.0×106 and 1.3×105 Hz, respectively. The relative concentrations of these traps varied uniformly as a function of the cooling rate of the zinc oxide from a sintering temperature of 1300 °C. The concentration of E1 decreased, while the concentration of E2 increased, with decreasing cooling rate.

Notes: Abstract Serum amylase and isoamylase values were determined in three groups of dogs. The first group contained control dogs while the other groups contained dogs with confirmed exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and diabetes mellitus respectively. The trypsin-like immunoreactivity test was also carried out on sera from dogs with exocrine pancreatic disease (EPI). A significant difference was detected in the serum amylase values between the three groups which may be of limited diagnostic value. Dogs with EPI had values lower than normal while those with diabetes mellitus had values higher than control dogs. No evidence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency was found in dogs with diabetes mellitus.

Notes: Abstract Allegations that inadvertent pregnancies in contraceptive users are associated with congenital anomalies continue to be common. In 1985, a review by one of us concluded that there is little or no scientific basis for such claims [1]. Since then, additional data have substantiated this conclusion, particularly with respect to spermicides and hormonal contraception. The purpose of this review is to update information with respect to potential teratogenicity for these two contraceptive methods.

Notes: Abstract High spin states of175, 176Pt have been populated in144Sm(35Cl,pxn) reactions at beam energies of 175–185 MeV. In-beamγ-ray spectroscopic techniques using the ESSA30 spectrometer array were adopted. Levels up to spin 26 in176Pt and tentatively up to spin 45/2 in175Pt have been identified. The data are interpreted within the framework of Cranked Shell Model calculations using the deformed Woods-Saxon potential and including monopole pairing.

Notes: Abstract High-spin states up to I=22ħ have been observed for the first time in the odd-odd nucleus142Eu above the 8− β+ -decaying isomer. A new isomer of mean life τm=9.0± 0.6 ns and Jπ=8+ has been identified. The low energy part of the level scheme is interpreted in terms of single-particle excitations in the 2d5/2 and h11/2 orbitals and of the N=80 core excitations.

Notes: Abstract Fifty-two clones in twenty-two full-sib families were represented in a field trial. All cuttings were taken from hedged ortets which were four years from seed, but had been cut back periodically to one metre high since age two. One-year-old seedlings, from a seed orchard, where most of the parents of the clones were represented, were used as controls. The trial was assessed for Dothistroma needle blight infection six years after planting. The mean infection level of all the cuttings was 21.1%, compared to 29.8% for the seedlings. This difference was attributed to the greater maturation age of the cuttings. It was calculated that if the best 10% of the clones were selected, infection could have been further reduced to 12%, a level where other disease control measures would be considered unnecessary.

Notes: Summary Surface reflectance factors from bare field soil were measured to determine the relationship between surface soil water content and spectral reflectance. Reflectance in the six reflective Thematic Mapper (TM) bands plus a 1.15 to 1.30 µm bandpass (referred to as MMR 5) was measured using a groundbased radiometer across a soil water gradient provided by a line source sprinkler system. A spectral index of soil brightness (Brightness) derived using the Gram-Schmidt process and utilizing reflectance information was calculated for each band and for combinations of bands. The results of this study show that TM band 7 (2.05–2.30 µm) provided improved estimates of surface soil water content (0–0.5 cm depth) over estimates using reflectance information from all seven bands. Good correlations were also found between band ratio spectral indices of TM 5 (1.55–1.75 µm) / TM 7, MMR 5/TM 7, and MMR 5/TM 5 and surface soil water content. Results indicate that surface reflectance factors within bandpasses that partially overlap water absorption regions, such as TM 7, are most highly correlated with surface soil moisture. Band ratios utilizing a bandpass partially overlapping a water absorption region such as TM 7 and a non-water-absorbing bandpass such as MMR 5 yield close correlations with surface soil water content.
