Notes: Abstract Some new flexible and cross-linkable copolyimides containing rubbery unsaturated aliphatic chain moiety (CPLA) were prepared by low temperature polycondensation betweenm-phenylene diamine,bis- 3(4 carboxy phthalimido) benzene, and liquidα,Ω bis [2-(4 piperazinyl) ethyl aminocarbonyl] poly-(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (ATBN) in (DMAC) solution. The effect of rubbery aliphatic moiety in these copolyimides on the polymer properties has been reported. A comparative study on the properties of these copolyimides (CPLA) with the mixture of ATBN and a low molecular-weight cross-linkable copolyimide possessing the same molecular structure as the aromatic moiety of CPLA polymers has been made.

Notes: Abstract The approximate energy release rate for a crack which extends, or “kinks”, away from its original direction has been computed by finite element analysis using three different methods: stiffness derivative procedure, J integral method and crack closure integral procedure. A case study is presented to compare the computational accuracies. It suggests that a satisfactory approximation can be obtained provided that the ratio of kink length to original crack length, l(0)/a⩽0.04, despite the interaction of the crack tip and knee stress singularities.

Notes: Studies on impact and tensile properties of binary blend of PP and ABS and ternary blend of PP, ABS, and LDPE are presented. Variation of impact strength and the fracture surface morphology with blend composition is examined and interpreted. Tensile behavior in the yield region is studied and the trends of variation of work of yield and impact strength are compared to ascertain the predominent mechanism of impact toughening in these binary and ternary blends. An analysis of yield-stress data in terms of theoretical models is presented to reveal the differences in these binary and ternary blends, attributable to the role of LDPE component in the ternary blend.

Notes: A 3-noded triangular two singular points finite element is proposed to model two variable order singularities lying at close proximities as in the case of a kinked crack. The element meets the rigid body mode and the interelement compatibility of the convergence criteria. A degenerate form of the element is a one point variable order singularity element, which meets all the convergence requirements. A number of kinked crack problems have been analysed using the new element and its degenerate form. The computed results are compared with analytical solutions. The accuracy of the results is found to be good.

Notes: The thermal properties of nickel powder filled polypropylene composites were measured over a range of filler concentrations. The thermal conductivities increased with filler concentration. Data were compared with predictions by theoretical models for two phase systems. The equation of Cheng-Vachon gave reasonable agreement with measurements. A TGA (thermogravimetric) study of the composites showed that the presence of nickel powder increases the thermal stability of polymer through an increase in activation energy to a maximum at a critical filler concentration, beyond which the stability decreased. The Vicat softening point of the composites was also increased in the presence of Ni powder.
