Notes: A microscopic computer experiment is set up to investigate the statistical properties of far from equilibrium homogeneous chemical systems undergoing instabilities. Sustained periodic behavior of limit cycle type is observed. Both the frequency and the amplitude of the oscillations are found to be in good agreement with the macroscopic description. A comparison with the stochastic theory of chemical systems based on master equation formalism is also carried out. The dynamical and static correlation functions obtained by these two procedures are in very good agreement.

Notes: We have prepared, using molecular-beam epitaxial techniques, superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O films directly on Al2O3, yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ), and MgO without buffer layers. The structure and stoichiometry of the films on Al2O3 are compared with those prepared on YSZ and MgO and found in large part determined by reactions with the substrates. The films on Al2O3 consist of textured Y2Ba4Cu8O20−x with superconducting onset at 80 K and zero resistance at 69 K, whereas on YSZ and MgO, YBa2Cu3O7−z films are formed. Auger electron depth profile spectroscopy in conjunction with structural and transport studies suggest that copper is depleted from the region near the Al2O3 substrate.

Notes: Summary This report concerns the immunohistochemical demonstration of two neuronal Ca2+-binding proteins, calcineurin and synaptophysin, in the spinal cord of normal controls and from patients with familial dysautonomia. In controls, calcineurin immunoreactivity was highly concentrated in small nerve cells and fibers of the substantia gelatinosa. Synaptophysin immunoreactivity was normally distributed throughout the spinal cord gray matter, being highly concentrated in the substantia gelatinosa, the dorsal nucleus of Clarke and the anterior horn. In patients with familial dysautonomia, no apparent changes in calcineurin immunoreactivity were found in the substantia gelatinosa. By contrast, there was a significant depletion of synaptophysin-positive axon terminals in the substantia gelatinosa and in the dorsal nucleus of Clarke of patients with familial dysautonomia.

Notes: Summary We report three cases of ring chromosome 5 [r(5)], two familial (mother and daughter) and one sporadic. The phenotype resembled that of the “ring syndrome” with prenatal onset of short stature, growth retardation, mild facial dysmorphism and normal psychomotor development. Extended metaphase and prometaphase chromosome preparations using G-, R- and Q-banding and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) failed to demonstrate deletion in the ring 5. Flow karyotype using the FACS cell sorter and peak area analysis showed the r(5) to be in the same position as the normal chromosome 5. The deletion that is presumably associated with ring formation appears to involve less that one megabase of DNA. In the “complex” rings, high resolution SEM showed fragile sites at the 5q34 and 5q35 region with frequent deletions at that site. A literature survey suggests that when a parent carries a ring chromosome about 80% of recognised pregnancies result in live birth. Of these, about half have a normal phenotype and karyotype, and half inherit the parental ring; about half of those acquiring the ring (20%) show significant mental retardation.

Notes: Abstract Metallothioneins (MTs) protect cells from the toxic effects of heavy metals. It has been suggested that they play a role in cellular resistance to alkylating agents and ionizing radiation because of the coincidence of cadmium- and drug-resistance and by virtue of the reactivity of MT with free radicals. We report the analysis of mouse B16 melanoma cell lines with high and low constitutive MT expression. In these cells, both cisplatin and cadmium resistance were associated with constitutive MT accumulation in the absence of heavy-metal induction. However, in cells with high constitutive MT expression (where zinc treatment did not induce increased MT expression), cisplatin resistance, but not cadmium resistance, was increased approximately twofold by zinc treatment. Methotrexate resistance also was increased by zinc treatment in some cases. We conclude that MT is associated with cisplatin resistance, but that effects of heavy-metal treatment other than MT induction are also responsible for cisplatin and methotrexate, but not cadmium, resistance.
