Notes: The adiabatically adjusting principal-axis hyperspherical (APH) formulation of Pack and Parker for quantum reactive scattering in three dimensions (3D) is used to obtain converged results for the reaction of helium with H+2 (v=1–4) for total angular momentum J=0. The ab initio potential energy surface computed by McLaughlin and Thompson and fitted by Joseph and Sathyamurthy is utilized for the HeH+2 interaction potential. The predicted energy dependence of the accurate 3D state-to-state reaction probabilities show clear evidence for quantum resonances. These resonances are even more numerous than those reported earlier for reduced dimensionality studies of this reaction. The calculated time delays for several of these resonances are found to be over 1 ps. Bending corrected rotating linear model (BCRLM) studies of this same reaction are also reported. These results provide useful insight in sorting out the nature and contribution of the resonances found in the 3D studies.

Notes: In a prospective open study, 15 patients with ulcerative colitis which was unresponsive to conventional therapy were treated with enemas containing bismuth subsalicylate (700 or 800 mg b.d.).Nine out of the 15 patients showed a significant clinical response, and 6 had gone into complete clinical remission after 8 weeks. treatment. Sigmoidoscopic appearances of the rectal mucosa showed improvement in 9 out of 15 patients at 2 weeks, and 11 out of 15 at 8 weeks. The mucosa appeared sigmoidoscopically normal in 6 out of 15 at 8 weeks. It proved possible to reduce the oral prednisolone dosage from a median of 15 mg/day (range 10 to 35 mg/day) to 6 mg/day (range 0 to 18 mg/day) after 8 weeks of treatment; 5 patients were no longer taking oral steroids at this time.Rectal bismuth subsalicylate appears likely to be an effective therapy in ulcerative colitis and controlled trials are now required.

Notes: [Auszug] We used the results of previous measurements of SiC in acid residues to define the conditions for the in situ search: the concentration is 6-9 p.p.m., most of the mass is in grains 〈1 µm in size, the background of other silicon-bearing compounds is high, and it is not known whether the ...

Notes: Abstract Growth was assessed in children following 128 separate kidney transplants using a generalized growth curve multivariate analysis. The height standard deviation score was the dependent variable. Time since transplant, prednisone dosage, and creatinine clearance were the independent variables. For the purposes of comparison patients were grouped according to sex, race, age at transplantation, initial allograft function, acute rejection episodes and the use of cyclosporin A. Patient's height standard deviation scores tended to increase negatively after transplantation. However, children who received transplants before their 7th birthday, with initial allograft function greater than 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2, exhibited “catch-up” growth. Height standard deviation scores positively improved in males but not in females, as prednisone dosage was decreased. Height standard deviation scores became more negative as renal function decreased after transplantation. Changes in renal function produced the greatest effect upon height in black children, children less than 7 years, and males.

Notes: Abstract There is a large, diverse and rapidly growing body of OH observations from regions associated with star formation, the physical conditions of which are of great interest. To interpret these observations we need to calculate the populations of the OH energy levels using as accurate a model as is feasible. We have developed a large velocity gradient (LVG) model using the lowest 48 hyperfine states of OH and including the phenomenon of far-infrared line overlap using a new theory which treats all thermal and velocity overlaps. If we use a theory of maser propagation (Field and Gray, 1988) we are then able to see how competing maser lines develop. The generic behaviour which we find is in good agreement with the extensive maser observations of Gaume and Mutel 1987 and our calculations allow us to associate general physical conditions with the four ground state maser frequencies. In addition we are able to present preliminary results of the interpretation of the OH absorption observations of Guilloteauet al. (1984) and Walmsleyet al. (1986) for the compactHII region DR21.

Notes: Abstract Nutrient analyses of foliage from a naturally occurring hybrid of Pinus contorta Loud. and P. banksiana Lamb. (lodgepole pine × jack pine), were used to determine if chronic exposure to S gas emissions had affected the nutrient status of the trees. This study was part of a larger case study investigating the effects of 17 yr of exposure to S gas emissions from a S-recovery gas plant on a forest ecosystem in west central Alberta, Canada. Significant inverse, linear relationships were found between foliar sulphate-S levels and distance from the S source in all three age classes of pine foliage tested. Sulphate-S levels increased with increasing age of foliage at sites near the source while they decreased with increasing age of foliage at sites not frequently exposed to the S gas emissions. Soil pH was reduced in the top 5 cm of soil at sites near the source and elevated contents of total S in the soil were also found at those sites. Manganese concentrations in foliage from the sites near the source were significantly higher than in foliage from sites away from the source. The level of Mn also increased with increasing age of tissues. The elevated level of sulphate-S in foliage and lower soil pH at sites near the source indicated significant amounts of S from the source had been deposited at those sites. The lower soil pH most likely contributed to the increased availability of Mn that was found in the foliage.
