Notes: The oxide superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ is known to have a rather free entrance of oxygen into the CuO chain between the BaO layers, and the oxygen deficiency δ is closely related with the critical temperature Tc. (1) When Y3+ site is substituted with Ca2+, the position of the oxygen vacancy is not on the Cu–O plane, but on the CuO chain as well as in the case of YBa2Cu3O7−δ. (2) When this substitution is done, electric neutrality is kept by the release of a half O2− for one Y3+ substitution with one Ca2+. (3) Therefore, the concentration of the positive hole is constant for this substitution, and Tc of the system is kept at the rather high temperature of about 86 K. (4) The relation between Tc and the hole concentration is in good agreement with the non-Ca2+ containing YBCO, and it can be said as a conclusion that the substitution of Y3+ with Ca2+ does not give any effect on the mechanism of the superconductivity of this system. (5) The crystallinity of the system is improved by the substitution to be better sintered and to have more narrow width of the critical temperature.

Notes: A new method of mode analysis of multimode microwaves in an oversize waveguide is developed which utilizes infrared camera images of the radiation profile of microwaves launched from the waveguide end. Systematic variations of the radiation pattern with different phase shifts among constituent modes are compared with theoretical predictions to identify the constituent modes and to determine their fraction of power. Characteristics of a step-wise modulated TE02–TE01 mode converter are examined by using this method. It is demonstrated that this method is useful as a practical means for on-site analysis of waveguide properties.

Notes: An apparatus for the measurement of high-energy electrons (10–500 keV) with a silicon surface-barrier detector is described. The apparatus has special features. In particular, a fast CAMAC transient digitizer is used to directly record the wave form of a pulse train from the detector and then pulse heights are analyzed with a computer instead of on a conventional pulse height analyzer. With this method the system is capable of detecting electrons with a count rate as high as ∼300–400 kilocounts/s without serious deterioration of performance. Moreover, piled up signals are reliably eliminated from analysis. The system has been applied to measure electron-cyclotron-resonance-heating-induced end loss electrons in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror and has yielded information relating to electron heating and diffusion in velocity space.

Notes: This paper reports numerical and experimental analyses of a stepwise modulated TEon mode converter based on the mode-matching formulation. By systematic analyses, the dimensions of the TE02 to TE01 converter at 41 GHz are optimized so that a power conversion efficiency higher than 99.3% is theoretically obtained with a reflection coefficient less than 0.2%. The simple structure of the converter not only allows easy manufacturing with ordinary machining but it also enables the converter characteristics to behave well and be readily adjusted on the laboratory site. Based on the numerical analyses, a mode converter is designed and fabricated for use in the ECRH experiment on the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. Preliminary tests show that the converter works well at a high power, above 100 kW. The transmittable power is limited by external nonaxisymmetric modes which can eventually be suppressed with efficient mode filters.

Notes: Abstract. Imachi M, Tsukamoto N, Shimamoto T, Kamura T, Saito T, Nakano H. Treatment of patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma with massive pleural effusions. Int J Gynecol Cancer 1991; 1: 263–267.Twelve patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma who had massive pleural effusions were treated between 1985 and 1989. Clinical stages of these patients were stage IIa, 1 and stage IV, 11. Histologic diagnoses were six serous adenocarcinomas, three endometrioid carcinomas, one mucinous adenocarcinoma, one clear cell carcinoma, and one squamous cell carcinoma. Massive pleural effusions were noted in the chest roentgenograms in all patients. Eight patients had effusions in pleural cavity, and four in both. The volumes of fluid removed from the pleural cavities ranged from 440 to 3650 ml, with a mean of 1905 ml. Eleven patients (92%) had malignant cells in their pleural effusions. Before surgery, all patients received thoracocentesis, and nine of them underwent continuous drainage by thoracic tubes. Eleven patients were given cis-platinum-containing chemotherapy after operation. Seven patients died of disease within two years. However, four patients underwent second-look operation and showed no evidence of residual disease. Malignant pleural effusions in ovarian carcinoma showed a good response to cis-platinum containing systematic chemotherapy. From the above results, it is concluded that under the drainage of pleural effusions debulking surgery followed by systematic chemotherapy is useful for patients with advanced ovarian carcinomas and massive pleural effusions.

Notes: Abstract Pressureless-sintered (PLS) SiC was joined to Nb by solid state bonding in a vacuum. The joining strength of the PLS SiC/Nb joint increases to the saturated value of 108 MPa with increasing joining pressure at a joining condition of 1673 K and 7.2 ks. This saturated value of PLS SiC/Nb joint is higher than that of the reaction sintered (RS) SiC/Nb joint. The strength of SiC itself affects the strength of the SiC/Nb joint. The high stability of the intermediate phase Nb5Si3 in the interface at elevated temperature leads to the high heat resistance of the joint. The thickness of the intermediate phase Nb5Si3 in the PLS SiC/Nb system is lower than that of the RS SiC/Nb system at a constant joining time, although the activation energy, 452 kJ mol−1, of growth for the phase in the PLS SiC/Nb system is almost the same as the RS SiC/Nb system, 456 kJ mol−1. The rate constant of the growth for the phase in the PLS SiC/Nb system is lower than that in the RS SiC/Nb system. The excess silicon in RS SiC promotes the formation of the Nb5Si3 phase at the interface between SiC and Nb.
