    Notes: From our high resolution REMPI threshold photoelectron measurements of jet-cooled tropolone, it has been found that no spectral doublet showing "proton tunneling'' in the cation ground state (D0) is observed within an experimental accuracy of 2 cm−1. The adiabatic ionization potential was obtained as Ia=68 365±5 cm−1.

    Notes: Abstract The periodontal conditions of 2424 pregnant and 1565 non-pregnant women were assessed according to the community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN). The aim of this survey was to obtain information which is necessary for the planning of preventive programs of periodontal disease for pregnant women. 95% of the pregnant women and 96% of the non-pregnant women had some signs of periodontal disease. The % of pregnant women having 4 or 5 mm pockets was significantly higher than that of non-pregnant women, increased with the month of pregnancy, reached a maximum of 31%) in the 8-month group, but decreased to the control level in the 9-month group. These changes were interpreted to suggest that the increase of pocket depth during pregnancy was caused by gingival enlargement rather than by periodontal destruction. The results show that pregnant women had a healthier periodontal condition when compared with non-pregnant women, i.e., the number of sextants with healthy periodontal tissues was higher, the % of people having deep pockets (6 mm or deeper) was lower, and the need for prophylaxis was lower in pregnant than in non-pregnant women. These findings suggest that a special program of periodontal disease prevention for pregnant women is not necessary.

    Notes: Summary We investigated the temporal profile of the extravasation of serum albumin in a reproducible gerbil model of unilateral cerebral ischemia, using immunohistochemical and dye-tracer techniques to evaluate albumin accumulation and the occurrence of active extravasation, respectively. After 30 min of cerebral ischemia and subsequent reperfusion, immunostaining for albumin became visible in the lateral part of the thalamus during the first 3 h, and then expanded to other brain regions up to 24 h. At both 24 h and 3 days after reperfusion, massive extravasation of albumin was noted in the whole ischemic hemisphere, and this had decreased again by 7 days after reperfusion. The extent and the degree of albumin immunopositivity were almost the same in all animals examined at each period after reperfusion. The extravasation of Evans blue, which was allowed to circulate for 30 min before death, was limited to the lateral part of the thalamus during the first 6 h of reperfusion. In the circumscribed area of massive albumin extravasation, many neurons were immunopositive for albumin; most of these neurons appeared to be intact and also showed immunostaining for microtubule-associated protein 2. The current investigation clearly demonstrated that (1) albumin extravasation was produced with reliable reproducibility in this model, (2) the lateral part of the thalamus was the region most vulnerable to ischemic blood-brain barrier damage, and (3) many apparently intact neurons in the ischemic region were positive for albumin.

    Notes: Abstract Etodolac, a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was administered orally at doses of 1 and 5 mg/kg to MRL/MpJ-lpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) mice, and its effect on articular lesions was compared with that of indomethacin. Both etodolac and indomethacin significantly reduced swelling of the hind paw. Histopathological examination showed that etodolac significantly reduced cartilage and bone damage, whereas indomethacin treatment did not achieve a statistically significant effect. Rheumatoid factors were not affected by either etodolac or indomethacin. These results indicate that etodolac delays the development of arthritis in MRL/lpr mice, and reduces cartilage and bone damage.

    Notes: Abstract Ferromagnetic properties of ultrafine magnetite (Fe3O4) particles were examined by the ESR and the static magnetic susceptibility measurements. Ferromagnetic resonance became to be observed at the particle size larger than 3.4 nm. This finding suggests that the bulk-like ferromagnetic state cannot be formed in the particle less than 3.4 nm diameter for magnetite. Magnetic moments in such a small diameter region were also determined by the analyses of magnetization curves and were found to be smaller than those expected from the particle size. These findings from ESR and magnetization are discussed to clarify the nature of spin-ordering in a finite size sample.

    Notes: Abstract The coalescence process of Au small particles (11 nm in radius) dispersed in 2-propanol is studied via fractal analysis. It was found that the particle network grows one-dimensionally at an initial stage and three-dimensionally in later stage accompanying with the increase of the size of a constituent particle. Ostwald ripening was found at the beginning of the growth process. The intensity of the absorption band at around 750 nm gradually increases in concurrence with the growth of particle network at the expense of the decrease of the intensity of 523 nm plasmon band of isolated particles.

    Notes: A sensitive and rapid method to analyse fuel components in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour was developed by making use of capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon numbers 8-10 and aromatics such as toluene, xylene, 3- and 4-ethyltoluene and trimethylbenzenes were clearly detected in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour, using the head-space method combined with the salting-out technique. The concentration ratio of pseudocumene to toluene in blood exposed to light oil was higher than that in the case of exposure to kerosene. The lower limits of detection were 50 pg and 1 ng in toluene and pseudocumene, respectively. Our suggestion is that this method is useful in forensic investigations to detect fuel components in blood and for the purposes of differentiating kerosene and light oil in blood tissues.
