Notes: The Phebus laser was used to irradiate gold targets at λ=0.35 μm; the laser pulse was 0.7 or 1.3 ns and the energy on target 1 to 1.8 kJ. The incident intensity was varied from 3×1013 to 3×1015 W/cm2. The time history of x-ray emission was monitored in the range 0.2–2.5 keV with a streak camera coupled with a transmission grating. Numerical simulations cannot replicate the temporal evolution of soft x-ray emission (hν〈800 eV), although the total conversion efficiency is correctly reproduced. Some observations, including time and space-resolved images, show that unexpected soft x-ray emission is produced in the corona at large distances from the target surface. A possible explanation is that cold and dense jets are generated towards the underdense plasma by an instability.

Notes: In the literature on directly unproductive profit seeking or rent seeking, intervention-seeking by labor and industry groups is generally restricted to direct lobbying activity. However, import-competing producers may have an additional instrument to influence the decision to grant protection. Under well-established injury criteria for protection import-competing producers have an incentive, either collectively or individually, to feign injury. To the extent that the free-rider problem can be overcome, orchestrating the appearance of injury is an intervention-seeking activity that may be complementary to DUP lobbying. When the established indicators of industry well-being include variables controlled by the prospective beneficiaries, therefore, free trade under the prospect of protection is potentially accompanied by a concomitant spurious-injury distortion. Some of the positive and welfare implications of the theory of spurious injury are investigated in both a partial equilibrium framework and in the Heckscher-Ohlin model.

Notes: Summary In this paper we will deal with definitions ofsubjective poverty lines. To measure a poverty threshold value in terms of household income, which separates the poor from the non-poor, we take into account the opinions of all people in society. Three subjective methods will be discussed and compared, viz., the Leyden Poverty Line (LPL), the Subjective Poverty Line (SPL) and the Centre for Social Policy Poverty Line (CSP). In the empirical part of the paper we compute the average poverty line and a few corresponding characteristics for each definition.

Notes: The molecular weights of the recombinant proteins interleukin 2 and interferon gamma were determined by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectroscopy on the whole molecules. For interleukin 2 an average experimental mass of 15 549.4 u, was observed in excellent agreement with the theoretical average mass of 15 547.2 u. The mass observed for interferon gamma (16 908.4 u) agreed with the theoretical molecular weight of the monomeric species (16 907.3 u). By ESI mass spectrometry it was possible to determine the presence of proteins lacking one or two amino acids.
