Notes: Cell cycle progression of in vitro-stimulated human B lymphocytes occurs a synchronously. In order lo allow detailed studies of growth Control G1. B cells Were stimulated with anti-μ and low molecular weight B-cell growth factor (LMW BCGF) for 50 h and subsequently separated into nine fractions of cells by means of centrifugal elutriation. As judged by volume profiles, activation antigen expression and DNA content, the cells in fractions t 4 were in early Io mid-G1, while fractions 5 7 mainly contained cells in late G1. and fractions 8 9 contained cells mainly in Sand G2, Cells in fractions 5–7 had passed the commitment point, as demonstrated by a high spontaneous incorporation of [3H]thymidine when recultured in medium alone. Moreover S-phase entry of these cells was largely unaffected by exogenous growth-promoting or growth-inhibitory signals. Cells in early (fractions 1 2) and intermediate fractions (fractions 3 4) showed a negligible spontaneous 3[H]thymidine incorporation, but a significant proportion of these cells progressed to S phase upon restimulation. Moreover, while IL-4 or the anti-CD40 MoAb G28- 5 potently stimulated cells in early and intermediate fractions, the responsiveness to LMW BCGF alone was obtained Just prior to the commitment point.

Notes: Abstract Behavioral activity of single components of beaver castoreum was demonstrated for the first time. In four experiments samples were presented to free-ranging beaver in their family territories. First, responses to whole castoreum and anal gland secretion (AGS) from males and females were tested. Second, 24 compounds, known to be constituents of beaver castoreum, were individually screened for activity. Four of these consistently released immediate responses during the observation periods. These are the phenols 4-ethylphenol and 1,2-dihydroxybenzene and the ketones acetophenone and 3-hydroxyacetophenone. In the most complete responses, the beaver sniffed from the water, were attracted to the odor, swam toward its source, went on land, and then approached, sniffed, pawed, and scent-marked the artificial scent mound. 4-Ethoxyphenol, a compound not yet found in castoreum, also released these responses. Five additional compounds resulted in a few delayed visits to the samples during the night following the observations, as evidenced by destroyed scent mounds. These are 4-methyl-1,2-dihydroxybenzene, 4-methoxyacetophenone, 5-methoxysalicylic acid, salicylaldehyde, and 3-hydroxybenzoic acid. Third, mixtures of 24 and six compounds were tested. Responses to these mixtures could be as strong as those to whole castoreum. Fourth, the four regularly active compounds were tested in two additional beaver populations and proved to be active there, too. The response was strongest in the densest beaver population.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Orthodontic brackets were bonded to a total of 240 Biodent porcelain surfaces pretreated with a number of different porcelain primers. In a control group, 40 surfaces were pumiced, etched, rinsed and dried, and then bonded to similar brackets without the use of a primer. The test objects of group 1 (n=140) and those of group 2 (n=40) were tested for bond shearing strength in a material testing machine (Zwick 1441) after prior incubation in a corrosive fluid at a pH of 2.3 and a temperature of 37°C for 24 hours and 21 days, respectively. The fracture sites were inspected and analysed. Incubation in corrosive fluid reduces the strength of the porcelain-composite bonding, the shearing strength and the number of fractures in the bonding decreasing. Damage to the porcelain was seen to occur after the use of Lee-Ortho-Prime and Bond-Por primers. All the primers tested can be used, although a bond shearing strength of less than 2 N/mm2 is at the lower limit of what can be accepted under the usual conditions of daily practice.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The status of temporomandibular joint and muscle function was examined in a group of 22 adult patients, who underwent combined orthodontic and surgical treatment. Even though nearly all patients were very content with the results of the therapy, 2/3 showed a rather reduced movement of the condyle after mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. The causing factors are: arthrosis, permanent displacement of the disc or a change of muscle function after surgery.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The structure of former orthodontically treated patients, who underwent a long-term follow-up study in October 1989, was evaluated. An attempt was made to contact 1429 former patients, whereby 28.8% did not get the invitations because they had changed their address. As the compliance of approximately 17 years postretention of the 1018 patients depends on change of address, job, interest and death, 20% of these were willing to participate and get examined. A structural conformity of the controlled group and the patient total cannot be presumed due to the patients' answers in the follow-up study. Questionnaires will be sent to patients, who did not participate in the analysis, in order to avoid unilateral results.

Notes: Summary Treatment of human NHIK 3025 cells during interphase with the mitotic inhibitor 2-(2-thenyl) sulfonyl-5-bromopyrimidine (NY 4137) induced the formation of multipolar mitotic cells. A 4 h pulse treatment with 0.010 mM NY 4137 induced the formation of such cells regardless of whether treatment occurred in G1 or S phase. Approximately 35% of the cells originating from such multipolar mitotic divisions had less-than-normal G1 DNA content. Recordings of the DNA content of these small cells by means of flow cytometry showed that the amount of DNA per cell varied randomly. Subpopulations were separated by centrifugal elutriation on the basis of differences in cellular volume. Simultaneous two-parametric recordings of DNA versus total cellular protein showed that even though cells contained an amount of DNA less than G1 cells, there was a proportionality between DNA content and protein content despite variations in cell size.
