    Notes: This study examined the effects of goal choice, strategy choice, and feedback source on goal acceptance, performance, and future self-set goals. The results were partially consistent with earlier work by Earley and Kanfer (1985) in that goal and strategy choice interacted to affect initial performance and goal acceptance. However, the nature of the performance interaction was not as expected. Results pertaining to future goals and subsequent performance suggested that goal choice was an important determinant of future goals and that feedback, goal choice, and strategy choice interacted to influence subsequent performance. Contrary to expectations, feedback source did not exert a main effect on subsequent performance, goal setting, or perceptions of feedback acceptance and usefulness. Discussion centered on the differential impact of choice on perceptual and behavioral variables and the failure of self-feedback to significantly affect subsequent goals and performance.

    Notes: Abstract Several investigators have used morphometric measurements to determine differences in the nuclear size and shape of normal and neoplastic colorectal tissue. Changes in nuclear morphometric parameters have also been shown to correlate with prognosis in a variety of noncolorectal cancers. The association of nuclear morphometry with prognostic indicators in rectal cancer has not been well studied. Measurements of the nuclear area, perimeter, longest cord, and circularity factor from 39 primary rectal adenocarcinomas were compared with DNA content, degree of tumor differentiation, Dukes' class, and patient survival. Nuclear circularity was found to correlate with DNA ploidy. Nondiploid tumors with a DNA index greater than 1.3 had significantly more circular nuclei than tumors with diploid or near-diploid DNA content. There was no correlation between nuclear morphometry and Dukes' class or patient survival. Significant increases in DNA content of rectal cancers appear to be reflected by measurable changes in nuclear shape. Nuclear morphometric measurements may provide useful information in the study of the progression of neoplastic changes in colorectal cancer.

    Notes: Abstract Sixteen patients with polyposis coli and cancer were studied retrospectively to determine the incidence of DNA ploidy abnormalities in the tumors and synchronous polyps. Six patients (37 percent) had nondiploid tumors. Nondiploid tumors were more likely to be advanced and had a significantly worse prognosis (17 percent vs.76 percent 5-year survival;P 〈0.01). Only 4 of 20 polyps studied were nondiploid. There was no association between tumor and polyp ploidy. All nondiploid polyps were found in patients with synchronous diploid cancers. Patients with nondiploid polyps were more likely to be older and have more advanced tumors than those with diploid polyps. DNA ploidy abnormalities seem to occur with the same frequency in polyposis coli as in the nonpolyposis population, and tumor ploidy correlates with prognosis

    Notes: Summary Recent evidence has shown that algal cells acquire different flagella and a heterogeneous basal apparatus through the prolonged development of these structures over more than one cell cycle. A system for numbering algal flagella and basal bodies, which is based on developmental studies, is discussed along with the various means by which the flagellar/basal body developmental cycle can be determined. We review the information now available on development of the separate components of the flagellar apparatus-this comes particulary from the Chlorophyta and the Chromophyta-and attempt to elucidate any information which may help in phylogenetic comparisons. New data is provided on developmental changes in the cartwheel part of the basal body and basal body-associated connecting fibrils in green algae.

    Notes: Abstract Several cell types participate in the formation of vitreoretinal traction membranes in proliferative intraocular disorders. The communication between these cells involves hormones, growth factors, and the interaction with extracellular matrix molecules. We have previously demonstrated a partial colocalisation of two potent mediators of cell attachment, fibronectin and vitronectin, in periretinal membranes from patients with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). We found a similar pattern of vitronectin and fibronectin deposition in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) (n = 6). Now we show the expression of the corresponding cell surface receptors, integrins, for fibronectin and vitronectin by proliferating cells in 22 periretinal membranes, including traumatic (n = 8) and idiopathic (n = 8) PVR as well as PDR membranes (n = 6). Integrins are membrane receptors for extracellular matrix macromolecules which are involved in such basic biological phenomena as embryogenesis and metastasis. Future studies on the pathogenesis of vitreoretinal proliferation will have to focus on the initiation, maintenance, and regulation of this intercellular communication network involving attachment proteins and integrins.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of a scaffold for cellular spreading and proliferation is a precondition for the development of traction membranes in proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). This study shows the presence of the serum spreading factor, vitronectin, in the extracellular matrix of periretinal membranes removed during vitreoretinal surgery. By means of a double label immunofluorescence protocol, a partial colocalisation of vitronectin with fibronectin at the magnification of light microscopy can be detected. Fibronectin is a high-molecular glycoprotein with multiple biological functions including the mediation of cell attachment and migration. Both proteins share a special cell recognition site which could be a target for experimental pharmacological approaches to PVR. Preliminary studies of vitreous aspirates using electrophoresis and Western blotting indicate that vitronectin may play a more important role in post-traumatic PVR as compared to PVR following rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

    Notes: Abstract We describe the long-term results after treatment of 68 eyes showing advanced stages of proliferative vitreoretinopathy with vitrectomy, daunomycin perfusion, and silicone-oil injection. Six reoperations were performed. After 18 months, 73% of the eyes showed no signs of retinal detachment and 89% had a visual acuity of 〉 20/800. These results are better than those reported in previously published studies. Whether this improvement was due to the daunomycin treatment or to more aggressive surgical techniques such as retinotomies remains to be answered by a randomized trial.
