    Notes: Kenya has for many years enjoyed a reputation for political stability, democratic institutions, lack of corruption, and economic growth, unlike a number of other countries in Africa. The Government has sought to emphasise this image in order to retain and attract foreign investment and aid, and to maintain a booming tourist industry. But for some time a corrosion of the rule of law has been taking place behind the facade of legitimacy, a process so accelerated during 1990 and 1991 that many people have questioned the validity of Kenya's reputation.

    Notes: Abstract Evidence supporting a smooth crack-like rupture process of the Michoacan earthquake of 1985 is obtained from a major earthquake for the first time. Digital strong motion data from three stations (Caleta de Campos, La Villita, and La Union), recording near-field radiation from the fault, show unusually simple ramped displacements and permanent offsets previously only seen in theoretical models. The recording of low frequency (0 to 1 Hz) near-field waves together with the apparently smooth rupture favors a crack-like model to a step or Haskell-type dislocation model under the constraint of the slip distribution obtained by previous studies. A crack-like rupture, characterized by an approximated dynamic slip function and systematic decrease in slip duration away from the point of rupture nucleation, produces the best fit to the simple ramped displacements observed. Spatially varying rupture duration controls several important aspects of the synthetic seismograms, including the variation in displacement rise times between components of motion observed at Caleta de Campos. Ground motion observed at Caleta de Campos can be explained remarkably well with a smoothly propagating crack model. However, data from La Villita and La Union suggest a more complex rupture process than the simple crack-like model for the south-eastern portion of the fault.

    Notes: Summary The anatomical basis of the vertebrate blood-brain barrier is a series of tight junctions between endothelial cells of capillaries in the central nervous system. Over two decades ago, tight junctions were also proposed as the basis of the blood-brain barrier in insects. Currently there is a growing understanding that septate junctions might possess barrier properties in various invertebrate epithelial cells. We now examine these two views by studying the blood-brain barrier properties of the early postembryonic larva of a dipteran fly (Delia platura) by transmission electron microscopy. Newly hatched larvae possess a functioning blood-brain barrier that excludes the extracellular tracer, ionic lanthanum. This barrier is intact throughout the second instar stage as well. The ultrastructural correlate of this barrier is a series of extensive septate junctions that pervade the intercellular space between adjacent perineurial cells. No tight junctions were located in either nerve, glial or perineurial cell layers. We suggest that the overall barrier might involve septate junctions within extensive, meandering intercellular clefts.

    Notes: Summary The amphibian antidiuretic hormone, arginine vasotocin, stimulated osmotic water flow across isolated skin from the pelvic but not the pectoral skin of the toad, Bufo woodhouseii. Changes in the apical membrane capacitance were not observed for either region of the skin following treatment with arginine vasotocin when there was an osmotic gradient across the tissue. In the absence of an osmotic pressure gradient, the apical membrane capacitance of the pelvic skin increased from 2.8±0.5 to 3.3±0.6 μF · cm-2 after treatment with 5 · 10-8 M arginine vasotocin. Under these conditions, apical membrane capacitance of the pectoral skin was 1.8±0.1 μF · cm-2 and did not change significantly after arginine vasotocin treatment. The amiloride-sensitive short-circuit current across the pelvic skin was stimulated by arginine vasotocin as was the density of channels in the apical membrane as determined by fluctuation analysis. Values for channel density in the pelvic skin also correlated with apical membrane capacitance and increased from 90 to 273 channels per μm2 of estimated membrane area following arginine vasotocin treatment. In the pectoral skin the stimulation of short-circuit current following arginine vasotocin treatment was small and an increase in channel density could not be demonstrated. The current through single Na+ channels in both regions of the skin did not different either before or after arginine vasotocin treatment.
