Notes: AbstractFor many firms, entering into some form of collaborative arrangement with other organizations has become a necessary step towards improving their competitive positions. This is particularly true of research intensive companies which frequently participate in such strategic alliances (SAs). This paper reports on the experiences of some 70 North American firms with SAs in the biotechnology industry. The sample includes small dedicated biotechnology companies (DBCs) and large organizations, such as pharmaceutical firms.

Notes: The success of the immunofluorescence technique has as its basis a specific immune reaction which is readily influenced by physicochemical variables. In all procedures careful examination with appropriate selection of materials and conjugates and careful observation must be made. Proper controls are required to interpret specific reactions and distinguish these from nonspecific artefacts and other patterns which cause diagnostic confusion. The recognition of immunofluorescence artefact patterns is essential to the trainee who is gaining experience in immunofluorescence microscopy. However, the correct diagnosis in the individual patient is further insured by correlating all the relevant clinical and histological details with the immunofluorescent findings.

Notes: Deuterium NMR at the natural abundance was used to determine the site-specific isotope ratios (D/H)i of the non-equivalent isotopomers of various chemical species which exist in plant products. The deuterium distribution in glucose, galactose and mannitol samples from different botanical and compartmental origins is discussed in terms of the influence of plant metabolism and environmental factors. Particular emphasis is given to the potential versatility of deuterium NMR in the study of natural isotopic distribution in pro-chiral situations. Typical examples of chiral recognition are given in the field of glycolysis metabolites (ethanol, amino-acids) and of monoterpene biosynthesis.

Notes: Four different methods of oven roasting beef were studied. Twelve semi-tendinosus muscles were transversely divided, and the 24 subsamples were allocated to 4 cooking methods: High temperature roasting (HTR) with a constant oven temperature of 170C; low temperature roasting (LTR) with a constant oven temperature of 120C; maximum temperature roasting (MTR) with maximally 70C 1 cm below the roast surface and temperature difference roasting (TDR) with constantly 50C between the oven and 1 cm below the roast surface. Quality parameters measured were cooking loss, Warner-Bratzler shear parameters and taste panel ratings.Mean heating times of HTR, LTR, MTR and TDR were 69, 100, 79 and 157 min, respectively. Most of the quality parameters by HTR were significantly poorer as compared with the other methods, while differences between LTR, MTR and TDR were small.Surface heat transfer coefficient was estimated as 14.1 W/m2C. Heating times were predicted with a maximum deviation of 10%.

Notes: Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine whether melatonin (aMT) influences the postnatal development of the mammary gland parenchyma in female mice from the time of weaning to adulthood. Twenty-one-day-old female BALBc mice were treated with daily subcutaneous injections of aMT (200 (μg) or diluent, 3 hr before the onset of darkness (photoperiod LD 12:12). At 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 weeks of age, batches of 20 animals (ten controls and ten aMT-treated) were sacrificed and the second pair of mammary glands were dissected to evaluate their degree of development. Melatonin decreased body weight gain from 2 weeks before until 2 weeks after the onset of puberty. Treatment with aMT also resulted in a lower DNA content and smaller area of the mammary gland from the time of puberty until the end of the study. In aMT-treated mice the phase of highly positive allometric growth began 2 weeks later, but ended at the same time as in controls (11th week of life). Finally, aMT decreased the development of terminal, lateral, and alveolar buds while it increased the number of terminal ducts per gland. We conclude that pharmacological doses of aMT (1) reduce body weight gain at the peripuberal age; (2) partially inhibit postnatal mammary gland development by reducing the number of epithelial structures representing sites of growth and increasing that of structures representing the final state of ductal growth in virgin animals; (3) delay the onset of and shorten the phase of rapid mammary growth occurring in early postpuberal age.

Unsere Ergebnisse unterstützen somit die Hypothese, daß das System neurosekretorischer Neurone eine allgemeine Bedeutung für endokrine Regulationsmechanismen im Gehirn von Teleostei besitzen.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Summary Localization of neurophysin-immunoreactive neurons in the hypothalamus of the South American cichlid Cichlasoma nigrofasciatumThe distribution of the polypeptide neurophysin was examined by immunohistochemistry in the hypothalamus of the cichlid Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum. A distinct group of neurophysin-immunoreacrive nerve cells was found along the subependymal lining in an area belonging to the magnocellular preoptic nucleus. An arched bundle of neurophysin fibers originating from these cells travelled in ventromedial direction to the posterior pituitary, where a high density of immunopositive varicosities was observed. Additional investigation of neighbouring sections using an antiserum against vasotocin revealed an overlap of vasotocin positive neurons with the localization observed for neurophysin. A comparison with studies in other vertebrates demonstrated a good correlation with our results. Thus, our findings support the hypothesis that the system of neurosecretory neurons may be of general functional importance for neuroendocrine regulatory mechanisms in the brains of teleosts.
