Notes: In the sheath regions strong electric fields can develop that accelerate ions to sufficient energy to cause sputtering and increase the plasma impurities to an intolerable level. Simulations of these sheaths are performed with a one-and-two-half-dimensional (y,vx,vy,vz) electrostatic particle model with a homogeneous magnetic field tilted in relation to y; guiding-center electrons and full dynamic ions are used. The plasma is taken to be bounded by metallic walls in which a time-dependent potential difference V(t) is applied and the average energies and flux of ions hitting the walls are computed. The results show that the magnetic fields inhibits the sputtering caused by D atoms. Comparisons of the present model with previous work, which used a Vlasov model and fluid approach, are also made with good agreement in the appropriate regime.

Notes: Regeneration and changes in land use in London's Docklands have resulted in new water quality requirements. Areas previously occupied by docks now form part of redevelopment projects which have made a feature of the water. The paper describes a project to provide water that is aesthetically pleasing and of a quality suitable for water contact recreational activities. An extensive programme of water sampling and analysis was carried out to gain an understanding of the processes affecting water quality, including the monitoring of algal growth. The river is the main source of nutrients in the docks, which results in large concentrations of algal biomass and bacterial contamination. The principal strategy is to limit light via artificial mixing systems supplemented by limiting the inflow of nutrients from the river. The results from the water sampling programme have been used to build a 3D computer model with a supporting graphic information system to attain (a) qualitative evaluations of management and development options, and (b) short-term predictions of changes in water quality.

Notes: [Auszug] Periodic volcanism has occurred on the Kaapvaal craton in southern Africa since the Archaean era, and each episode will have modified the composition of the subcontinental lithos-pheric mantle in which the magmas were generated or through which they passed, or in other words caused mantle ...

Notes: Abstract Different patterns of B and T-lymphocyte migration were observed in normal mice and in animals with a site of chronic inflammation. The early migration of lymphocytes into a site of chronic inflammation, induced by sensitisation and challenge toBordatella pertussis vaccine (BPV), comprised mainly B-cells. Subsequently, a greater influx of T-cells occured as the inflammation progressed. The lymphocyte population in the inflammatory exudate was composed of equal numbers of B and T-cells throughout the 30 day time course. Preferential migration of B-cells to Peyer's patches (PP) and T-cells to peripheral lymph nodes (PLN) occured in both normal mice and animals with a site of chronic inflammation. In contrast, B-cells migrated preferentially to the spleen in normal mice while in mice with chronic inflammation a greater migration of T-cell was observed. These findings indicate the presence of homing receptors for PP on B-cells and of PLN homing receptors on T-cells, with their distribution unaffected during the development of the inflammatory response. In contrast, the inflammatory process did alter the type of cell migrating into the spleen which may reflect an increase in antigen presentation in the mice challenged with BPV.

Notes: Abstract The effect of time and of antigen sensitisation and challenge on lymphocyte migration into a site of chronic inflammation has been examined in the mouse. Enhanced lymphocyte migration occurred at sites of chronic inflammation after sensitisation and challenge toBordetella pertussis vaccine (BPV). Biphasic migration was observed with time (5 min to 24h), the initial very rapid but transient localisation at the inflamed site being followed by a second slower more sustained influx of cells. Increased localisation was also obtained with time in the lymphoid tissues and was accompanied by a parallel decrease in the number of cells present in the blood. The relative importance of antigen sensitisation and challenge for lymphocyte migration to a site of chronic inflammation has also been assessed. Lymphocyte migration into the inflamed site was partially dependent on the immunological status of the injected lymphocytes, but the presence or absence of antigen at the site of inflammation was the major factor which determined the degree of migration to the site.

Notes: Abstract Mica pyroxenite xenoliths, occurring as the cores of nephelinite and ijolite bombs in the pyroclastic deposits of the active volcano Oldoinyo Lengai, have undergone metasomatism in which K was lost and Fe2+ and Ti gained. This is unlike the alkali and ferric iron addition that typifies most examples of metastomatism adjacent to peralkaline igneous rocks in carbonatite complexes.
