    Notes: State-resolved integral cross sections for the inelastic scattering of the Hund's case (a) radical NCO(X˜ 2Π) by He have been measured in a crossed-beam apparatus. Two different types of measurements are reported: (1) state-resolved integral cross sections at fixed collision energies from 0.94–3.05 kcal mol−1 and (2) the collision energy dependence of state-specific product states for both 2Π3/2 and 2Π1/2 spin–orbit states of NCO(X˜ 2Π,0010). As in a preliminary account of this work for E0=3.74 kcal mol−1 [J. Phys. Chem. 91, 9630 (1991)], herein referred to as part I, dramatically different rotational level distributions were found for spin–orbit conserving or changing collisions. It is argued that this behavior and many other observations on this system are generic to the inelastic scattering of Hund's case (a) 2Π radicals. A conceptual framework to understand these results is elucidated in detail. The direct connection between the experimental observables and the Hund's case classification is made for the inelastic scattering of radicals. This connection can be viewed as a dynamical consequence of the Renner–Teller effect.

    Notes: An evaluation of a 30 gauge spinal needle in a combined epidural/spinal anaesthetic technique for Caesarean section revealed a 25% failure rate of the spinal element. In this unit, no more than 4% of spinal anaesthetics might be expected to fail. One of the reasons for the higher failure rate was that, when using the Tuohy needle as an introducer, the dura was not identified. This prompted us to compare the ‘hrough-the- Tuohy’ or needle within needle approach for combined epidural/spinal anaesthesia, with a technique that involved siting the epidural and spinal sequentially in separate spaces. One hundred women requiring elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia were randomised into single or double space groups. The technique failed in 16% of through-the-needle cases, and in 4% of sequential sitings. Combined spinal/epidural anaesthesia for Caesarean section is more successful if each procedure is performed using separate spaces.

    Notes: The analgesic efficacy of a single intramuscular dose of 75 mg diclofenac given after elective Caesarean section was studied in 50 women in a double-blind randomised manner using a patient-controlled analgesia system. The mean 18 h papavaretum consumption of the placebo group was significantly greater (91.4 mg compared to 61.4 mg). Subjective experience of pain and observed sedation were significantly greater in the control group up to 6 h after operation.

    Notes: The surface composition, structure and initial stages of oxygen adsorption of Ni3Al(110) have been investigated by ISS. The surface composition of the Ni3Al(110) surface was determined by Li+ and He+ ion scattering using selected scattering geometries. These results consistently show a surface composition of 50% Ni-50% Al in the outermost layer with some small percentage of Ni enhancement (perhaps 1-2%), while the second layer is basically Ni. The surface structure has been probed by measuring the intensity of Li+ ion scattering as a function of incident angle along the [001], [112], [111], [332] and [110] azimuthal directions. The interpretation of experimental data is based on the calibrated shadow cone and chain model simulations. The results show that there is no displacement of first-layer Al relative to first-layer Ni, but there is a contraction in the first-to-second layer spacing of 0.11 ± 0.08 Å. The adsorption of oxygen at low exposure (∼8L) and pressures in the range 2 × 10-8-1 × 10-6 mbar at a temperature of 700°C shows the disappearance of the Ni ISS signal, and the results suggest the formation of a monolayer of an AlOx overlayer. Using a model similar to that previously studied for the formation of AlOx islands on the Ni3Al(001) surface, this oxide overlayer has been shown to be AlOx islands with no influence on remaining areas on the crystal. The mechanism for apparent interchange of the Al atoms to the surface to replace the Ni atoms is also discussed.
