Notizen: Abstract Flow experiments through capillaries with 0.2% xanthan in aqueous solution and 0.1 N NaCl brine were carried out to study the influence of the molecular conformation on the flow development at relatively low shear rates, from 20s−1 to 400s−1. Capillaries with a wide range of length-to-diameter ratios, L/D = 4.5 to 1015 were used. The apparent viscosity as a function of L/D at a constant shear rate shows a continuous decrement of the viscosity as L/D increases, until an asymptotic value is reached. The decrement in the apparent viscosity is partially explained in terms of slip. It was found that slip is a function of L/D as well as shear stress, i.e., slip develops during flow, thus inducing spatial anisotropy in the fluid until a stable state is reached. However, the substantial difference in apparent viscosity between short capillaries and capillaries longer than 300 D may be attributed to dominant elongational flow due to the contraction in the small capillaries and slip in long capillaries. The flow in a sufficiently long capillary can be divided in four regions rather than three, as is usually assumed. In the first region, which corresponds to the entry, elongational and shear flow coexist and elongational flow dominant. In the second region, end effects and slip development are coupled. In the third region the flow is fully developed and end effects are negligible. However, the fluid shows physical characteristics different from those of the fluid at rest, as a consequence of prior slip development. The fourth zone is the exit region in which the velocity rearranges due to the change of boundary conditions. The length of each region depends on the conformation of the macromolecules and shear rate. In addition, it was found that the stiffness of xanthan increases with the increase of the ionic strength. Finally, a performance of Bagley's analysis in the whole range of L/D studied showed that the use of the Bagley correction is not a reliable way to correct for end effects when the flow is not fully developed and/or in the presence of slip.

Notizen: Abstract The excess molar volumes V m E at atmospheric pressure and at 25, 35 and 45°C for binary mixtures of 1-nonanol, with n-heptane have been obtained over the whole mole fraction range from densities measured with a vibrating-tube densimeter. The measurements at 25°C were extended to high dilution of 1-nonanol. The V m E are sigmoid for the three temperatures, with a small maximum at low mole fractions of the alkanol. The absolute values of V m E increase with temperature from 25 to 45°C.

Notizen: Abstract A gene (egl1) encoding an endoglucanase (EGL1) from Trichoderma longibrachiatum has been cloned and sequenced. This gene, homologous to the T. reesei egl1 gene, differs from it in the length of the introns (particularly the first one) and encoded protein. A cDNA fragment obtained by the rapid amplification of cDNA ends method, which takes advantage of the polymerase chain reaction, has been expressed in yeast under control of the cyc-gal inducible promoter and yeast clones able to secrete active enzyme have been obtained.

Notizen: Summary Bipolar molecular outflows are a ubiquitous phenomenon in the process of star formation. We review the main observational properties of the outflows around young stellar objects, highlighting the recent wealth of information provided by the new generation of large radiotelescopes operating at millimeter wavelengths (in particular the IRAM 30-m, the NRO 45-m, and the JCMT 15-m dishes). The observations of outflows containing molecular, jet-like flows and “bullets” are discussed in detail, as they provide key information for understanding origin and evolution of the outflows. We also discuss a number of closely related issues: the evidence for dense shocked gas associated with the flows, the interaction of the outflows with the ambient dense cores, the evolutionary status of the sources driving the outflows, the properties of circumstellar disks, and theoretical models of the origin of the neutral winds. All these areas are important for developing a plausible scenario for the formation and evolution of the bipolar molecular outflows.

Notizen: Summary The development of molecular markers has recently raised expectations for their application in selection programs. However, some questions related to quantitative trait loci (QTL) identification are still unanswered. The objectives of this paper are (1) to develop statistical genetic models for detecting and locating on the genome multi-QTL with additive, dominance and epistatic effects using multiple linear regression analysis in the backcross and Fn generations from the cross of two inbred lines; and (2) to discuss the bias caused by linked and unlinked QTL on the genetic estimates. Non-linear models were developed for different backcross and Fn generations when both epistasis and no epistasis were assumed. Generation analysis of marked progenies is suggested as a way of increasing the number of observations for the estimates without additional cost for molecular scoring. Some groups of progenies can be created in different generations from the same scored individuals. The non-linear models were transformed into approximate multivariate linear models to which combined stepwise and standard regression analysis could be applied. Expressions for the biases of the marker classes from linked QTL were obtained when no epistasis was assumed. When epistasis was assumed, these expressions increased in complexity, and the biases were caused by both linked and unlinked QTL.

Notizen: Summary The decision of whether or not to use QTLassociated markers in breeding programs needs further information about the magnitude of the additive and dominance effects that can be estimated. The objectives of this paper are (1) to apply some of the Moreno-Gonzalez (1993) genetic models to backcross simulation data generated by the Monte Carlo method, and (2) to get simulation information about the number of testing progenies and mapping density in relation to the magnitude of gene effect estimates. Results of the Monte Carlo study show that the stepwise regression analysis was able to detect relatively small additive and dominance effects when the QTL are independently segregating. When testing selfed families derived from backcross individuals, dominance effects had a larger error standard deviation and were estimated at a lower frequency. Linked QTL require a higher marker mapping density on the genome and a larger number of progenies to detect small genetic effects. Reduction of the environmental error variance by evaluating selfed backcross families in replicate experiments increased the power of the test. Expressions of the number of progenies for detecting significant additive effects were developed for some genetic situations. The ratio of the within-backcross genetic variance to the square of a gene effect estimate is a function of the number of progenies, the heritability of the trait, the marker map density and the portion of the genetic variance explained by the model. Different values (from 0 to 1) assigned to ρ (relative position of the QTL in the marker segment) did not cause a large shift in the residual mean square of the model.

Notizen: Abstract We have studied the prevalence of hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) serologic markers in female blood donors and in female prostitutes and the relationship of antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and of antibodies to HCV (anti-HCV) with the presence of treponemal antibodies (FTA-ABS) in non-intravenous drug using female prostitutes. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was found in 1.0% of the female blood donors, anti-HBc in 15.6% and anti-HCV in 0.7%. In the prostitutes, the prevalence of HBsAg was 6.1%, anti-HBc was positive in 29.0% and anti-HCV in 8.8%. No significant statistical association between the prevalence of anti-HBc or anti-HCV and the age of prostitutes (p = 0.9111 and p = 0.8254 respectively) or the length of time as prostitutes (p = 0.3583 and p = 0.5770) was found. FTA-ABS positive prostitutes had a significantly higher prevalence of anti-HCV than FTA-ABS negative prostitutes (p 〈 0.001). No statistical association was found between anti-HBc antibodies and positive FTA-ABS prostitutes (p = 0.336).

Notizen: The best yields and productivities of 0.38 g · g-1 and 0.35 g · l-1 h-1, respectively, for the propionic acid production in a batchsystem using sugar-cane final molasses as carbon source were obtained when an initial TRS concentration of 50 g · l-1 was used.It was obvious that this process is severely inhibited by the acids produced and the most drastic effect (μ = 0) was at a TVA concentration near to 250 mmol · l-1, independently of the initial TRS concentration employed.A generalizated equation of noncompetitive inhibition was adjusted: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$\mu = \frac{{\mu _{\max } }}{{1 + \left( {\frac{{TVA}}{{K_{\rm P} }}} \right)^n }}$$\end{document} and kinetic inhibition constants for each initial TRS concentration studied were estimated.
