    Notes: Time-dependent two-magnon scattering was previously proposed as a mechanism to explain the large magnitude of the ferrimagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth of barium ferrite as a function of frequency. In the present work, it is shown that a quantum mechanical mechanism like the Kasuya–Le Craw process (KL)1 but with the phonon excitation replaced by a single-particle excitation of a trigonal site iron ion, which moves in an anharmonic potential well, gives a linewidth contribution of less than a tenth of an Oersted and proportional to the frequency, as in the KL mechanism. We conclude, based on this work and our previous work on the KL mechanism, that neither of these mechanisms can explain the observed FMR linewidths in barium ferrite at any frequency.

    Notes: Summary The association between diurnal blood pressure variation and diabetic nephropathy was assessed in four groups of Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients who underwent 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring using an oscillometrie technique. Patients with nephropathy, who had never been treated for hypertension (group D3,n = 13), were individually matched for age, sex and diabetes duration to a group of microalbuminuric patients (D2,n = 26), to normoalbuminuric patients (D1,n = 26) and to healthy control subjects (C,n = 26). Group D3 was also compared to patients with advanced nephropathy receiving treatment for hypertension, mainly a combination of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, metoprolol and diuretics (D4,n = 11). In group D3 24-h diastolic blood pressure (85 ± 8 mm Hg) was comparable to the results obtained in D4 (85 ± 8 mm Hg) but significantly higher than in D2 (78 ± 7 mm Hg), D1 (73 ± 7 mm Hg) and C (73 ± 7 mm Hg,p 〈 0.05, Tukey's test). The night/day ratio of diastolic blood pressure was higher in D3 (86 ± 5 %) and D2 (85 ± 7%) than in C (80 ± 7 %,p 〈 0.02). This ratio was also elevated in group D4 (94 ± 8%) compared to D3 (p 〈 0.05) corresponding to a marked smoothing of the diurnal blood pressure curve. The 24-h heart rate (beats per min) was significantly elevated in D3 (84 ± 8) and D2 (80 ± 10) compared with C (73 ± 11,p 〈 0.05 Tukey's test), suggesting the presence of parasympathetic neuropathy In conclusion the normal circadian variation of blood pressure was moderately disturbed in a group of microalbuminuric patients and patients with less advanced overt nephropathy. Patients with advanced diabetic nephropathy receiving antihypertensive therapy showed a marked reduction of nocturnal blood pressure fall, which can only be identified by the application of ambulatory blood pressure measurements to verify the 24-h effectiveness of blood pressure control.

    Notes: Abstract Lymphocytic colitis is a newly described chronic diarrheal disorder. Although its etiology is unknown, the possibility has been raised that autoimmunity may play a role in both lymphocytic and collagenous colitis, a similar clinicopathologic illness. The frequencies of HLA class I and class II antigens were examined in 24 white patients with lymphocytic colitis and in 47 white patients with collagenous colitis. Frequencies in these two disorders were compared to control white populations and to each other. An increased frequency of HLA-A1 was noted in 16 of 24 lymphocytic colitis patients (66.6%) compared with 1089 of 3942 controls (27.6%) (P〈0.005; relative risk 5.2). Furthermore, HLA-A3 was found in decreased frequency in lymphocytic colitis patients: 0 of 24 (0%) compared with 1017 of 3942 controls (25.8%) (P〈0.05; relative risk 0.0). Collagenous colitis patients had no significant deviation from control frequencies of HLA antigens. In lymphocytic colitis, there was no significant increase in B8 or DR3 antigens, which are found in linkage disequilibrium with A1 and associated with many autoimmune diseases. Moreover, the frequency of autoimmune-associated class I HLA antigens was not increased in lymphocytic colitis. Statistically significant differences existed between lymphocytic and collagenous colitis in HLA-A1, A3, Bw6, and B7 antigen frequencies. The HLA patterns noted previously in other gastrointestinal disorders, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, were not apparent in lymphocytic or collagenous colitis. HLA typing provides further evidence that lymphocytic colitis is a distinct form of chronic intestinal inflammatory disease associated with HLA class I phenotypes.
