    Notes: The fundamental isotropic Raman Q branch of oxygen at pressures up to 2 atm and for temperatures between 295 and 1350 K has been recorded using stimulated Raman gain spectroscopy (SRGS) for collisions with oxygen and nitrogen. The line broadening and line shifting coefficients have been determined for several rotational quantum numbers (up to N=55 at 1350 K). The temperature dependence of these coefficients has also been studied for most of the rotational lines. The line parameters (widths and shifts) have been then calculated a priori through a semiclassical model. A good agreement between experimental and theoretical data has been observed. Another theoretical approach based on fitting and scaling law has been used to calculate the line broadening coefficients. It is shown that a modified exponential energy gap model (MEG) and an energy corrected sudden law (ECS) for the state-to-state rotationally inelastic rates, account for the rotational and temperature dependences of the observed linewidths. With regard to the energy corrected sudden law, the best results are obtained when the basis rate constants are modeled with a hybrid exponential-power fitting law (EP). The line broadening and shifting coefficients of the oxygen–nitrogen mixture are very close to those found for pure oxygen.

    Notes: Abstract We cloned and characterized a new highly repetitive, species-specific DNA sequence from turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). This repeat family, which accounts for approximately 5% of the turkey genome, consists of a 41 bp repeated element that is present in tandem arrays longer than 23 kb. In situ hybridization to turkey metaphase chromosomes (2n=80) demonstrated that this sequence was located primarily on certain microchromosomes: approximately one-third of the 66 microchromosomes showed a positive signal. With respect to the macrochromosomes, hybridization was seen only in a pericentric position on nos. 2 and 3. The turkey microchromosome (TM) sequence shares motifs (alternating A3–5 and T3–5 clusters separated by 6–8 bp) that have been found previously in other avian tandemly repeated elements, e.g. a chicken microchromosome sequence, and W (female) chromosome-specific sequences of chicken and turkey. However, the TM sequence does not cross-hybridize under moderately stringent conditions with these other sequence. The spread and amplification of related repetitive sequence elements on microchromosomes and W chromosomes is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Acute cold haemagglutinin disease, most commonly associated with underlying mycoplasma infection, is rare in children. A 3-year-old girl who developed this auto-immune disease under intensive cytotoxic treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma is presented. Clinically, a livedo reticularis skin pattern upon exposure to cold which was reversible at room temperature and a spontaneous red cell agglutination of blood samples in vitro led to the diagnosis. Together with bronchopneumonia the girl developed hyper-IgM, high antibody titres againstMycoplasma pneumoniae, as well as high titres of cold agglutinins. Laboratory signs of mild intravascular haemolysis were found. Positive direct antiglobulin test resulted from coating of red cells with C3d and C4. Three different antibodies were identified in serum: nonspecific cold agglutinins without complement activation, anti-I specific cold agglutinins with complement activation, as well as a weak biphasic Donath-Landsteiner haemolysin. Under antibiotic treatment and a short course of predisolone the clinical course was mild.
