    Notes: Impact ionization rates in GexSi1−x alloys and strained layers are expected to be strongly influenced by the threshold energies for ionization. We have calculated the threshold energies along the principal crystal axes from empirical pseudopotential band structures for Ge, Si, and GexSi1−x alloys (x=0.25, 0.5, 0.75). Both relaxed (cubic) and strained [tetragonal, grown on (001) cubic Si] alloys were examined. The ionization process with the lowest threshold energy in Si is different from that in Ge, for both electron- and hole-initiated ionization. For the cubic alloys, the lowest thresholds are "Si-like'' for compositions up to approximately x=0.65. The effect of strain on the GexSi1−x alloys is to increase the ratio of the lowest hole threshold to the lowest electron threshold for all compositions, suggesting the possibility that GexSi1−x strained layer avalanche photodiodes may exhibit superior noise properties.

    Notes: Mycoplasma-like organisms (MLOs) were detected by fluorescence microscopy in a number of pear cultivars and pear seedlings growing under a range of different conditions. In the cultivar Conference, MLOs were consistently associated with symptoms of Parry's disease, a decline-like disease of young trees with quince rootstocks. MLO-free pear seedlings rapidly became infected when they were planted outside. Experimental transmission of MLOs to pear seedlings and Conference trees was achieved using pear psyllids, caught outside or raised on infected plants under controlled conditions. Conference trees in an orchard trial remained free from the severe spring symptoms of Parry's disease when they were protected from feeding insects during spring of the previous year. MLOs were graft transmissible, but were not perpetuated by the standard propagation practices of budding or grafting when quince rootstocks were used. Parry's disease appears to be similar to pear decline, an MLO-induced disease well established in several other parts of the world. It is suggested that Parry's disease should be referred to as pear decline.

    Notes: Abstract. Two monoclonal antibody probes were produced against PK'X’ cells. The parasites were partially purified by filtration and centrifugation of kidney tissue from rainbow trout with proliferative kidney disease and used as antigen for immunization of mice. The resulting monoclonal antibodies reacted with PK'X’ cell antigens in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemistry tests. One antibody (Mab 12) appeared to be specific for PK'X’in kidney tissue, while the other (Mab 18) cross-reacted with host cell antigens in the kidney tubules. These probes are invaluable tools for the investigation of parasite surface antigens and life cycle studies.
