Summary In an epidemiological study of 370 recruits, the need for orthodontic treatment was investigated. Subjects who had previously received orthodontic treatment (n=135) were compared with untreated subjects (n=234). An unequivocal need for orthodontic treatment was ascertained in 50% of the recruits. Differences between previously treated subjects and untreated subjects were not significant. Some 60% of the orthodontic measures had been carried out by an orthodontist, and 40% by a non-specialist dentist. The results of treatment were generally unsatisfactory, although the success rate achieved by the orthodontists did appear somewhat higher than that seen with non-specialist dentists.

Zusammenfassung Anhand einer epidemiologischen Untersuchung an 370 Rekruten wurde der kieferorthopädische Behandlungsbedart ermittelt. Probanden mit (n=136) und ohne (n=234) früherer kieferorthopädischer Behandlung wurden verglichen. Ein eindeutiger Behandlungsbedarf lag bei 50% der Rekruten vor Kieferorthopadisch behandelte Probanden unterschieden sich nur geringfügig von nicht kieferorthopädisch behandelten Probanden. Etwa 60% der kieferorthopädischen Behandlungen wurden von Fachzahnärzten und 40% von Allgemeinpraktikern durchgeführt. Die Behandlungserfolge waren generell als unbefriedigend einzustufen, auch wenn die Erfolgsquote bei Fachzahnärzten etwas höher als bei Allgemeinpraktikern zu sein schien.
