    Notes: A new technique for bonding sulfur atoms to gallium arsenide surfaces is described. In this technique the surface is exposed to gas-phase atomic sulfur at 60–70 °C. The resulting surfaces were characterized by angle-dependent x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The data show that, in contrast to passivation of GaAs by H2S at low temperatures, this technique yields a surface on which the sulfur is almost exclusively bonded only to gallium atoms.

    Notes: Forty-one cases of nasopharyngeal and 13 cases of nasal malignant lymphoma have been examined histologically and immunohistochemically. All of the cases were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; one case was of follicular type and the remaining 53 were of diffuse type. Large cell lymphoma comprised 48% of cases and most of the immunoblastic lymphomas showing pleomorphism occurred in the nose. Twenty-seven cases were of T-cell and 21 of B-cell phenotype. The predominance of T-cell lymphoma was due to an increased incidence of these in the nose, the T: B ratio of 3.33:1 contrasting with a 1:1.05 ratio in the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal lymphomas seem to show an intermediate incidence between the T-cell predominance in the nose and a B-cell predominance in the oropharynx. Since the large cell type of lymphoma was predominant, the differential diagnosis from undifferentiated carcinoma is important and is facilitated by the use of immunostaining methods.

    Notes: Abstract Two types of solutions may be considered in generalized shape optimization. Absolute minimum weight solutions, which are rather unpractical, consist of solid, empty and porous regions. In more practical solutions of shape optimization, porous regions are suppressed and only solid and empty regions remain. This note discusses this second class of problems and shows that a solid, isotropic microstructure with an adjustable penalty for intermediate densities is efficient in generating optimal topologies.

    Notes: Abstract A highly efficient new method for the sizing optimization of large structural systems is introduced in this paper. The proposed technique uses new rigorous optimality criteria derived on the basis of the general methodology of the analytical school of structural optimization. The results represent a breakthrough in structural optimization in so far as the capability of OC and dual methods is increased by several orders of magnitude. This is because the Lagrange multipliers associated with the stress constraints are evaluated explicitly at the element level, and therefore, the size of the dual-type problem is determined only by the number of active displacement constraints which is usually small. The new optimaliy criteria method, termed DCOC, will be discussed in two parts. Part I gives the derivation of the relevant optimality criteria, the validity and efficiency of which are verified by simple test examples. A detailed description of the computational algorithm for structures subject to multiple displacement and stress constraints as well as several loading conditions is presented in Part II.
