    Notes: Based on two different experiments and an optical field calculation, we show that the free-carrier absorption αfc in Zn(Cd)Se/ZnMgSSe semiconductor lasers is about 4 cm−1 and that it is smaller than that of GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor lasers. We have measured the dependence of the L-I characteristics on the cavity length of double heterostructure (DH) lasers under photopumped operation and of single quantum well-separate confinement heterostructure (SQW-SCH) lasers under current-injected operation. For the DH laser, the total absorption coefficient αi and β×J0 product (β is a gain constant, and J0 is the nominal current density that makes the gain equal to zero) are estimated to be 4.2 cm−1 and 8.6×10 cm−1, respectively. For the SQW-SCH laser, αi, β, and J0 are estimated to be 21 cm−1, 4.23×10−3 cm×μm/A, and 1.9×10−3 A/(cm2×μm), respectively. By calculating the optical fields of these lasers, we have estimated that the absorption in a GaAs substrate is 16.53 cm−1 in the SQW-SCH laser and that it is negligible in the DH laser. We have shown that the large loss in the SQW-SCH laser is caused by both αfc and the absorption in the substrate and that αi in the DH laser is caused only by free carrier absorption.

    Notes: Abstract Faecal vitamin K1 (VK1, phylloquinone) and vitamin K2 (menaquinone, MK) concentrations were measured in 12 breast fed and 9 formula fed 1-month-old infants. Faecal concentrations of VK1 and MK-5 to-9 were significantly higher in the formula fed than in the breast fed infants. There was also a tendency for higher total faecal MK (4–10) concentrations in the formula fed [geometric mean (95% confidence intervals); 8995.0 (3872.6, 20893.0) pmol/g of dry faeces] than in the breast fed infants [2937.7 (1285.3, 6714.3),P=0.051]. The numbers of streptococci andEscherichia coli were 100 and 10 times higher, respectively, in the faeces of the formula fed than in those of the breast fed infants. Faecal concentrations of MK-6,-7 and-8, and MK-8 were correlated with the numbers of streptococci andE. coli in the faeces, respectively. Serum VK1 and MK concentrations were measured in 9 out of 12 breast fed and eight out of nine formula fed infants. The serum VK1 concentration was much higher in the formula fed infants [average (95% CI); 2.20 (1.48, 2.92) pmol/ml] than in the breast fed ones [0.30 (−0.10, 0.70),P=0.000], but MKs were not detected in the sera of most of the formula fed infants.

    Notes: Abstract Hypergalactosaemia was discovered in a newborn girl during routine metabolic screening. Hereditary enzyme deficiency was ruled out. She had multiple hepatic haemangiomas with portal-hepatic venous and hepatic arterio-venous shunts. Since she showed signs of high-output heart failure due to the arterio-venous shunt, hepatic artery embolization was performed at age 3 months. A galactose tolerance test was performed before and after embolization and when the haemangioma no longer appeared on ultrasonography. Even after embolization, the level of blood galactose was abnormally elevated in the galactose tolerance test, but the blood galactose was eliminated more rapidly than before embolization. When the hepatic haemangioma was no longer detected by ultrasonography, the peak galactose level decreased. We surmise that the hypergalactosaemia was due to these shunts. In cases of hypergalactosaemia of unknown cause; liver haemangioma with portal-hepatic venous shunting should be considered as a possible cause. If a hepatic arteriovenous shunt also exists, this may contribute to the effect of the portosystemic shunting.

    Notes: Abstract The selective formation of CO and H2 was observed by a molecular-beam catalytic reaction betweenn-C4H10 and O2 on a Pt surface from around 1000 to 1500 K. The infrared emission of the product CO desorbed from the surface showed that the CO molecules are vibrationally substantially excited but rotationally very cool (rotational temperature;T R = 360 K). The present molecular-beam study showed that CO and H2 were formed directly from the hydrocarbon and O2 without involving formation of CO2 and H2O as primary products. The implications of these results are discussed for the partial oxidation of methane (and other alkanes) to synthesis gas using practical supported metal catalysts.

    Notes: Abstract The combination of the anodic oxidation of naphthalene on a PbO2 electrode with the mediated oxidation of naphthalene in the cathode chamber using the Cu(i)/Cu(ii) redox couple in a divided electrolytic cell produces 1,4-naphthoquinone with a current yield of 77%. The by-products are 1-naphthol and 2-formyl-trans-cinnamaldehyde. The pathways for the formation of these products are discussed.
