    Notes: Abstract An ecological data base for the San Jacinto Mountains, California, USA, was used to construct a probability model of wildland fire occurrence. The model incorporates both environmental and human factors, including vegetation, temperature, precipitation, human structures, and transportation. Spatial autocorrelation was examined for both fire activity and vegetation to determine the specification of neighborhood effects in the model. Parameters were estimated using stepwise logistic regressions. Among the explanatory variables, the variable that represents the neighborhood effects of spatial processes is shown to be of great importance in the distribution of wildland fires. An important implication of this result is that the management of wildland fires must take into consideration neighborhood effects in addition to environmental and human factors. The distribution of fire occurrence probability is more accurately mapped when the model incorporates the spatial term of neighborhood effects. The map of fire occurrence probability is useful for designing large-scale management strategies of wildfire prevention.

    Notes: Post-hydrogenation anneals of shallow SiGa donors in GaAs indicate that their reactivation rate is enhanced in the presence of an applied electric field. We show that existing data are consistent with the SiGa-H complex being a deep donor dissociating only via its ionized state. The 0/+ level of this deep donor is found to be at EC−0.75 eV. There is no need to appeal to the existence of negatively charged hydrogen to account for the reactivation of SiGa donors.

    Notes: Evidence is presented to suggest that unintentional concentrations of silicon, germanium, and aluminum at gallium arsenide film substrate interfaces are transported as suboxides. A thermodynamic treatment is used to conclude that arsenic oxide, desorbed from substrates, provides the oxygen for suboxide formation in the vicinity of effusion cells. Silicon and germanium suboxides can then be reduced by gallium on substrate surfaces. Reduction of aluminum suboxide is thermodynamically unfavorable, thus oxygen is incorporated with aluminum. An approximate value of 68.4 entropy units is derived for the process As4 (large-closed-square) 2As2.

    Notes: Unprecedented demands for uniformity, throughput, anisotropy, and damage control in submicron pattern transfer are spurring development of new, low pressure, high charge density plasma reactors. Wafer biasing, independent of plasma production in these new systems is intended to provide improved ion flux and energy control so that selectivity can be optimized and damage can be minimized. However, as we show here, an inherent property of such discharges is the generation of significant densities of excited, metastable ionic states that can bombard workpiece surfaces with higher translational and internal energy. Absolute metastable ion densities are measured using the technique of self-absorption, while the corresponding velocity distributions and density scaling with pressure and electron density are measured using laser-induced fluorescence. For a low pressure, helicon-wave excited plasma, the metastable ion flux is at least 24% of the total ion flux to device surfaces. Because the metastable ion density scales roughly as the reciprocal of the pressure and as the square of the electron density, the metastable flux is largest in low pressure, high charge density plasmas. This metastable ion energy flux effectively limits ion energy and flux control in these plasma reactors, but the consequences for etching and deposition of thin films depend on the material system and remain an open question.

    Notes: Several intermolecular vibrational levels of the excited electronic state of OH–Ar correlating with OH A 2Σ+(v=0)+Ar have been characterized by laser-induced fluorescence and hole-burning experiments. The OH–Ar levels identified include the lowest intermolecular level, an intermolecular bending level with a lower degree of stretching excitation than previously observed, and intermolecular levels with two quanta of bending excitation. The intensities of electronic transitions to these levels from the lowest intermolecular level of the ground electronic state of OH–Ar (X 2Π) are significantly weaker than those of transitions previously reported. These data are used to refine a semiempirical potential for OH A 2Σ+(v=0)+Ar proposed by Bowman et al. [J. Phys. Chem. 94, 2226 (1990)]. The potential parameters have been adjusted to increase the potential anisotropy and the steepness of the radial potential in the O–H–Ar well region. The bound states supported by the adjusted potential have been calculated by taking into account the electron spin angular momentum of the OH radical. The calculated vibrational energies and rotor constants reproduce the rovibrational structure observed experimentally. A theoretical simulation of the OH–Ar electronic excitation spectrum based on the adjusted intermolecular potential yields an intensity pattern which is consistent with experimental results.

    Notes: Using laser-induced fluorescence techniques applied to Schumann–Runge absorption transitions from vibrationally excited O2(X3Σg−), we have measured the rotational and fine-structure level-specific linewidths in v=0 and v=2 of the B3Σu− state. These linewidths represent the first measurement of fine-structure level-specific predissociation rates in B3Σu−(v≤10), and they are found to vary considerably among the various rotational and fine-structure levels, encompassing a range of 0.09–0.34 cm−1 in v=0, N'≤36, and 0.4–1.4 cm−1 in v=2, N'≤24. Orbit-rotational coupling in the B3Σu−–3Πu interaction, in addition to spin-orbit coupling in the B3Σu−–1Πu, −3Πu, −5Πu interactions, is found to be crucial to explaining the relative predissociation rates among the fine-structure levels, even in low rotational levels. Measurements were made in the (v',v‘)=(0,9), (0,10), (0,21), (2,10), and (2,22) Schumann–Runge [B3Σu−(v')←X3Σg−(v‘)] bands without presumption as to the molecular constants in either the X or B states. The use of high ground state vibrational levels as a starting point for the photoexcitation measurements produces a spectral separation among the previously blended triplet components of the absorption lines. All lines in these bands are found to be broadened by predissociation, with those terminating in v'=0 and in the N'=J'−1 (F'1) levels exhibiting the smallest effect.
