Notes: Herbicides were applied annually for 3 years to a pasture population of Emex australis Steinh. Herbicide performance was highly variable, with significant effects on weed survival only in single seasons. In most cases, seed bank densities declined monotonically from an initial level of 1900 m−2. Seed banks decreased after seasons when E. australis contributed less than 25% to pasture dry matter. The annual decay rate of the seed bank was estimated to be 70%. Owing to the unreliability of the herbicides when applied at rates low enough to protect pasture legumes, the potential for tactical chemical control of E. australis is limited. Furthermore, it is argued that the potential for strategic chemical control is low, since the species can tolerate periods of population decline. E. australis could be managed more effectively by maintaining high densities of annual grasses and legumes, against which it is a poor competitor.

Notes: A basic management objective is to identify the production capacity of Atlantic salmon in both freshwater and marine environments. Production in the biological sense is the total elaboration of fish biomass over time, and it is a function of fish abundance, growth and survival. In this article, we consider the factors that affect production at low and high stock levels. Using data from New Brunswick (Miramichi and Restigouche Rivers) and Newfoundland (Western Arm Brook), we consider freshwater and marine production of salmon at low and high stock levels. For all life stages, freshwater and marine production are related to initial biomass of the year-class: thus, it is important to maintain adequate egg deposition. Production at high stock levels is stock-dependent and mortality is extremely variable, particularly in the marine environment.

Notes: Abstract: The complete skull of an anomalous odontocete cetacean from outer Disko Bay, West Greenland, is described and compared with the skulls of adult narwhals, Monodon monoceros, and belugas, Delphinapterus leucas. The anomalous whale's skull is much larger than those of normal narwhals and belugas. In particular, the rostrum and mandibles are relatively long and massive. The dentition is unlike that of any known cetacean, but some features of the teeth are considered analogous to those of both narwhals and belugas. The intermediate characteristics of the skull and dentition are consistent with the hypothesis that the anomalous whale was a narwhal-beluga hybrid.

Notes: As part of a study of nuclear power development in Japan and the United States, surveys of perceptions of risk toward 30 activities, substances, and technologies have been carried out in the Pacific Northwest and Tokyo, Japan. The results show that people in both countries have the highest level of dread toward nuclear waste disposal, nuclear accidents, and nuclear war, greater even than their dread of crime and AIDS. In addition to comparisons of dread, the paper also discusses similarities and differences between Japanese and American responses for other dimensions of risk perception.

Notes: [Auszug] A novel genetic selection in yeast has been used to isolate a complementary DNA for the transcriptional activator, Olf-1, which binds to the regulatory sequences of several olfactory-specific genes. The Olf-1 protein, expressed exclusively in the olfactory receptor neurons and their precursors, ...

Notes: Summary Monoclonal antibody resistant (MAR) mutants (which escaped antibody-mediated neutralization) were selected from simian (W 3) and human (LN) isolates of simian virus 5 (SV 5), using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) specific for antigenic sites 4 and 5 on the HN glycoprotein. Resistance correlated with an inability of the selecting antibody to bind with the respective MAR mutants. Sequence comparisons between parental and mutant HN proteins revealed multiple non-adjacent amino acid substitutions in the majority of MAR mutants. The same multiple substitutions were identified in mutants selected from both the LN and W 3 isolates of SV 5. Furthermore, different mutations on the primary sequence of the HN protein conferred resistance to the same MAb.

Notes: Abstract This paper develops an interpretation and analysis of the arguments for public education which open Book VIII of Aristotle's Politics, drawing on both the wider Aristotelian corpus and on examination of continuities with Plato's Laws. Part I: The paper opens with the question of why Aristotle would say that no one will doubt that education should be the concern of the legislator, and Sections I–III identify the nature of his enterprise in the Politics, the audience he wishes to address, the conclusions he seeks to establish in VIII. 1, and what public education would amount to for him. An important conclusion reached is that the first of Aristotle's two conclusions in VIII.1 has been routinely misidentified.

Notes: Abstract This paper develops an interpretation and analysis of the arguments for public education which open Book VIII of Aristotle's Politics, drawing on both the wider Aristotelian corpus and on examination of continuities with Plato's Laws. Part II: Sections IV–VII examine the arguments for the first of the two conclusions which Aristotle advances in VIII. 1, namely that education is important enough to merit the legislator's attention. It is shown, through a development of links between Politics V and the arguments of VIII. 1, that Aristotle's two arguments for this conclusion are calculated to appeal to two distinct subgroups within his intended audience, those who would be moved by a desire to promote the common good, and those who could only be counted on to desire the preservation of their own rule.

Notes: Abstract This paper develops an interpretation and analysis of the arguments for public education which open Book VIII of Aristotle'sPolitics, drawing on both the wider Aristotelian corpus and on examination of continuities with Plato'sLaws. Part III: Sections VIII-XI examine the two arguments which Aristotle adduces in support of the claim that education should be provided through a public system. The first of these arguments concerns the need to unify society through education for friendship and the sharing of a common end. Several versions of his second argument are considered, and the most promising of them is elaborated in connection with an examination of the links between instruction and legislation in theLaws. This yields what is probably the most compelling argument there is for the claim that public supervision of education is anecessary condition for a just society.
