Notes: A model is presented for the spatiotemporal dynamics of gain-guided semiconductor laser arrays. The model goes beyond coupled mode theory and treats the array as a single entity. Numerical simulations of twin-stripe gain-guided arrays yield stable or pulsing outputs, depending on array parameters.

Notes: A propagation model is presented for the dynamics of antiguided semiconductor laser arrays. The model takes into account diffraction, carrier diffusion, spatial hole burning, and carrier-induced antiguiding. Numerical results reveal a variety of spatiotemporal behaviors ranging from stable, quiescent operation to periodic and erratic intensity oscillations.

Notes: This study examines three conceptions of how capitalist firms are organized and the relationship between accounting, organization, and control. The first conceptions is based on neoclassical economic theories, and its central premise is the efficacy of contracts. The second model emphasizes Marxian ideas of class conflict and exploitation. Its organizational premise rests on hierarchy and accumulation. The third concept is sociological. Its core assumption is that firms act to create ‘organizational fields’ which assure their continued survival. Each of these three perspectives relies on accounting as a means of control. The paper argues that there is an institutional connection between accounting and corporate control; the connection is demonstrated by the way in which accounting legitimizes control through objectivity, methodology, and professionalism. Regardless of how control is theoretically conceived, accounting is a crucial aspect of control within the modern economic organization.

Notes: This study examines the empirical relation between a three-way classification of corporate ownership structure and earnings management through the use of extraordinary item (EI) reporting. The EI reporting decisions examined are those made during 1960-1966, a time period when US reporting standards allowed considerable management discretion with respect to both the classification of EIs and their placement in the financial statements (i.e., income. versus retained earnings statement). Overall, the results provide strong support for income-increasing behavior by non-owner managers. Importantly, the results also suggest that the three-way ownership classification scheme used in this study is superior to the dichotomous owner-controlled/managercontrolled classification typically used in accounting studies.

Notes: Abstract Current source density (CSD) analysis provides an index of the location, direction, and density of transmembrane currents that arise with synchronous activation of neural tissue and that generate an evoked potential profile in the extracellular medium. In neocortex and other laminated structures, a simplified, one-dimensional CSD analysis can be computed by differentiation of voltages sampled at discrete points in a linear array. One-dimensional CSD analysis is a practical and accurate method for defining both regional activity patterns and neural generators of surface-recorded evoked and event-related potentials. In computing the CSD, common practices of differentiating across spatial grids of 200 μm or more and use of spatial smoothing routines help to reduce noise, but severely limit the spatial resolution available to the analysis. High-resolution CSD procedures (i.e., 3 point differentiation using a spatial grid of 100 μm or less) are more suited to identification of processes within individual cortical laminae or sublaminae, but can magnify the contributions of computational artifacts. Despite the inclusion of independent indices of cellular activity (e.g., multiunit activity), both high- and lowresolution analyses may indicate current source and sink configurations for which there is more than one plausible physiological interpretation. In the present study we examined the resolving capacity and pitfalls of common CSD procedures using simulated ensembles of current dipoles. These were positioned and oriented to model the depolarization of lamina 4C stellate cells and thalamocortical afferents in macaque striate cortex. Empirically, the surface N40 appears in association with a CSD configuration which includes current sinks within the thalamorecipient (stellate) subdivisions of lamina 4C and a large current source extending considerably below 4C. Dipole ensemble contributions to the CSD profile were computed and compared to physiological data from this region. Small asymmetries in activation of model stellate laminae were sufficient to produce substantial open field contributions. However, the best fit with empirical CSD profile was found when the simulation included contributions from thalamocortical axons, along with both open and closed field contributions from dual stellate cell sublaminae. High-resolution CSD profiles were shown to be interpretable when computational artifacts characteristic of closed and open fields were identified using a series of differentiation grids.

Notes: Abstract Tourism has had profound impacts on Alpine communities. Changes in the inhabitants' way of life in their quest for a financially more rewarding pursuit are reviewed and residents' attitudes in four Austrian alpine communities regarding changes in family life, community welfare, community growth, and the environment are examined. The current situation regarding the importance of economic considerations and continued growth, as opposed to non-economic values, environmental considerations, and intangible elements, such as community well-being and the sociability of people, is analyzed against the backdrop of societal changes and characteristics of these communities.

Notes: Synthesis of a 2H-Inden-2-one Complex by Reduction of a Metal-Bound DicarbeneHerrn Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. E. O. Fischer zum 75. Geburtstag gewidmet.Tetracarbonylchromium complexes with chelating o-phenylene-biscarbene ligands are reduced in two steps as shown by cyclic voltammetry. The first step corresponds to a reversible one-electron transfer, the second to an irreversible one-electron reduction followed by a rapid rearrangement of the biscarbene ligand into an η5-bound 2H-inden-2-one system by a twofold C-C coupling with one CO ligand. By reaction of tetracarbonyl[o-phenylenebis(methoxymethylene)]chromium (4) with sodium amalgam in acetonitrile the diamagnetic tricarbonyl(η5-1,3-dimethoxy-2-indenone)chromium dianion [6]2- is formed as the final reduction product. Its structure was determined by NMR and IR spectroscopy.
