Notes: Summary Two hundred and eleven patients with lumbar disc herniation at 242 levels were divided into 5 groups by their appearances on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the findings at operation were compared to assess the accuracy of the MRI classification. There were no negative explorations. There was 92% sensitivity, 91% specificity and 92% accuracy for MRI in distinguishing protruded discs from other forms of lumbar disc herniation. For sequestrated discs there was 92% sensitivity, 99% specificity and 97% accuracy. In the extruded subligamentous type there was 71% sensitivity, 82% specificity and 79% accuracy, and 52% sensitivity, 92% specificity and 81% accuracy in the extruded transligamentous type. The overall accuracy of MRI predicting the types of herniated lumbar intervertebral disc was 85%. High resolution MRI is sensitive in detecting disc disease and specific in characterizing various subgroups of disc herniation, especially those which are sequestrated.

Notes: Abstract Mechanical and optical rheometric measurements are reported on solutions of polystyrene dissolved in dioctyl phthalate, a solution that can undergo an apparent phase separation upon the application of shear. Solutions prepared using three molecular weights ranging from one to four million were studied. Time-temperature superposition was observed to apply for these solutions up to and including the onset of an apparent shear thickening of the steady shear and first normal stresses. Optical measurements employing turbidity and scattering dichroism determined that concentration fluctuations were enhanced by flow and grew parallel to the vorticity axis below the critical velocity gradient for the onset of the apparent shear thickening effect. Prior to the onset of thickening, the fluctuations were observed to rearrange and orient parallel to the flow direction. Second normal stress difference measurements indicate these solutions have a negative ratio of the second to the first normal stress differences. It is interesting to point out that the ratio tends to zero in the vicinity of the shear rate range at which shear thickening occurs.

Notes: Copolymers of 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl m-isopropenyl-α,α-dimethylbenzyl carbamate (CB) with styrene (S) and with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were synthesized using AIBN as initiator. S-CB copolymers made from feed ranging from 0.45-0.94 mole fractions S and MMA-CB copolymers made from feed of 0.34-0.88 mole fractions MMA were used to determine the monomer reactivity ratios r1 and r2. The structure of S-CB copolymers was inferred to be mainly of a random nature and in the MMA-CB copolymerization system there is a stronger tendency to form alternating copolymers. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: New polymerizable urethane functional monomers containing hindered amine (III, III′) and their copolymers with styrene (S) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) are characterized and tested as hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS). Experimental results indicated that the monomers possess high photostabilizing effectiveness comparable to that of Tinuvin 770 and Tinuvin 765. Their copolymers with S and MMA showed lower photostabilizing effectiveness mainly due to the low hindered amine content in the copolymers. The copolymers, however, showed very high resistance to liquid extraction. UV and ESR analyses indicate that the photostabilizing mechanism of these HALS is through the scavenging action of nitroxyl radicals formed from degradation of the substrate polymer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
