Notes: The collisional heating rate of a fully ionized plasma driven by a strong electromagnetic pump wave is re-examined both analytically and with two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The high frequency conductivity model of Dawson and Oberman [J. Dawson and C. Oberman, Phys. Fluids 5, 517(1962)] is extended for the case in which the quiver velocity vo=eE/mωo is much larger than the thermal velocity vth and its equivalence to the results of Silin [V. P. Silin, Sov. Phys. JETP 20, 1510 (1965)] is shown. The Dawson and Oberman model is reduced to two-dimensions for comparison with the PIC simulations. Excellent agreement between the theory and the simulations for vo/vth≤1 is obtained. However, when vo/vth(very-much-greater-than)1 and the excursion amplitude xo=eE/mω2o is larger than the Debye length λD, the simulations show enhancements in the collision frequency from the theory. A possible mechanism for this enhancement is provided. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Benzyl dimethyl-n-hexadecylammonium chloride (BHDC) was investigated for its effectiveness as a corrosion inhibitor of pure iron in carbon dioxide saturated 3% sodium chloride solutions. Both a.c. impedance and d.c. electrochemical techniques were used. The compound inhibited the anodic reaction and was effective at low temperatures. Data obtained fitted the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. The inhibition characteristics are interpreted in terms of thermodynamics and the structure of the compound.

Notes: Abstract The tuffs and lava of the Igwisi Hills are the youngest magmatic rocks on the Tanzania Craton. They consist of small xenoliths of phlogopite-calcite-garnet lherzolite in an olivine-calcite-dolomite-apatite-perovskite-spinel-serpentine matrix. Their mineralogy, major element chemistry and isotope chemistry indicate strong affinities with kimberlite, particularly the calcite-rich kimberlites of the Benfontein Sills, South Africa. As such, the Igwisi Hills are the youngest example of kimberlite magmatism. The magma formed by small degrees of melting of a carbonate-apatite-bearing peridotite source at depths in excess of 110 km.
