Notes: Light scattering in a thin film of a mixture of dielectric and magnetic fluids has been studied under both electric and magnetic fields. The film can transmit visible light in no electric field. When an electric field is applied across the film, the transmittance decreases rapidly. The phenomenon is explained by Rayleigh scattering due to the dielectric clusters formed under the field. The decay time to return to the transmittance at no electric field after switching off the field is much larger than the response time after switching on the field; however, the usage of a magnetic as well as an electric field allows the decay time to be shortened.

Notes: Abstract In the present study, bone mineral density (BMD) of femoral neck and lumbar spine was compared between 38 Japanese female patients with hip fracture (age 63–89 years, mean±SD 76±7 years) and 162 age-matched female controls (age 62–90 years, mean±SD 75±7 years). BMD was measured in the femoral neck and lumbar spine (L2–4) using dual-photon absorptiometry (Norland model 2600). BMD values of femoral neck as well as lumbar spine were significantly lower in patients with hip fracture than in controls (0.504±0.097 v 0.597±0.101,p〈0.01, for femoral neck; 0.661±0.146 v 0.720±0.128,p〈0.05, for lumbar spine). Patients with hip fracture and controls were stratified according to their BMD levels at two measuring sites, and the ratio of the number of patients and controls at each BMD level was calculated as an indicator of fracture rate. This ratio showed an exponential increase as the femoral neck BMD declined, but only a gradual increase as the lumbar spine BMD declined. Specificity-sensitivity analysis revealed that BMD values of 0.59 and 0.54 g/cm2 at the femoral neck provided a specificity of 52% and 68% with a sensitivity of 90% and 75%, respectively. These findings suggest that Japanese patients with hip fracture are more osteoporotic than age-matched controls and that the selective measurement of femoral neck would be useful for predicting the risk of hip fracture.

Notes: Abstract In La2−x Ba x CuO4 (LBCO) the transition to a low-temperature tetragonal phase and the suppression of superconductivity occur at the carrier concentration p≈ 1/8 per copper. We will discuss the roles of various material parameters that control this instability. An unusual lattice softening has been found by ultrasonic measurement on La2−x Sr x CuO4 (LSCO). This softening is present only in an in-plane shearing mode and is ascribed to the growth of structural fluctuations in the normal state. These phenomena are closely related because both the structural change in LBCO and the applied strain in LSCO lift the degeneracy of in-plane oxygen sites. They clarify the importance of strong coupling between the normal-state electronic system and the lattice by a Peierls-type mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Novel softening has been found in the transverse elastic constant (C 11–C 12)/2 below 50 K in single-crystalline La1.86Sr0.14CuO4 (LSCO) by high-precision ultrasonic measurements in magnetic fieldsH along thec axis. With decreasing temperature, this lattice softening persists down to the superconducting transition temperatureT c(H), which is reduced to 14 K by applying fields up to 14 T. BelowT c(H) the softening turns to rapid hardening. This behavior indicates the presence of lattice instability of the orthorhombic (Bmab) structure in the normal state of LSCO, which disappears in the superconducting state. This is evidence for the intimate interplay between high-T c superconductivity and the lattice instability in LSCO.

Notes: Abstract We produced three monoclonal antibodies, SG1, SG2 and SG3, specific for human seminal γ-glutamyltransferase when characterized by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblotting. Seminal γ-glutamyltransferase was localized, by immunostaining, to the epithelial cells of the ductus epididymidis, seminal vesicle and prostate gland with SG1, those of the prostate gland with SG2, and those of the seminal vesicle with SG3. Rabbit polyclonal anti-seminal γ-glutamyltransferase serum reacted with the proximal convolution of the kidney and the bile capillaries of the liver, and with the epithelial cells of the reproductive organs. However, immunoreactivity was not observed in the kidney or liver with the monoclonal antibodies. Thus, these monoclonal antibodies are probably all specific to seminal γ-glutamyltransferase but recognize different epitopes.

Notes: Abstract In La2−x Ba x CuO4 (LBCO), the structural transition to a low-temperature tetragonal phase below 60 K and suppression of superconductivity are observed when the carrier density isp ∼ 1 /8 per copper. The replacement by divalent ions smaller than Ba2+ suppresses the static deformation of the lattice. We have found that the variationsT d2 and superconducting transition temperatureT c are quantitatively characterized by the averaged ionic radius at the La site or lattice parameters. This aspect of substitution could be regarded as the effect of chemical pressure, since similar variations have been reported on applying hydrostatic pressure. In La2−x−y Nd y (Ba, Sr) x CuO4,T d2 increases with increasingy in a wide range ofp whileT c is suppressed only at p∼ l /8. The structural transition atT d2 here should be ascribed mainly to the crystallochemical origin.
