Notes: The six independent elastic constants of β-oxygen have been measured over a pressure range extending from 6.0 to 9.5 GPa. Neither central forces between individual atoms, nor central forces augmented by the interactions between axial distributions of charge can give a reasonable account of the data. Force constant matrices were found which can account for the elastic data and the previously observed librational frequency. These matrices are based on general, short range forces with many-body interactions only among atoms contained in the same pair of molecules. Vibrational densities of states, distributions of individual-mode Grüneisen parameters, heat capacities, and the equation of state derived from the pressure dependence of the elastic moduli are presented.

Notes: We collected data on postoperative nausea and vomiting from 3850 patients aged 11–91 years. Thirty-seven percent of the 3244 patients who received a general anaesthetic reported nausea and 23.2% vomited. Twenty percent of the 606 patients who received a local anaesthetic reported nausea and 11.4% vomited. Of the general anaesthetic patients reporting nausea, 72.2% were women, and the mean age was lower than for those who did not (p 〈 0.001). Similarly for vomiting, 74.0% were women and again the mean age was lower (p 〈 0.001). Of the local anaesthetic patients reporting nausea, 62.0% were women and the mean age was lower than for those who did not (p 〈 0.001). Similarly for vomiting, 68.1% were women and again the mean age was lower (p 〈 0.001). Anxiety before general, but not local, anaesthesia was associated with postoperative nausea (p 〈 0.001) but not vomiting. Patients from the gynaecological, orthopaedic, ENT and general surgical wards had higher incidences of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Linear visual analogue pain scores were higher in patients with postoperative nausea and vomiting in both general and local anaesthesia groups (p 〈 0.001).

Notes: Abstract. Eight semi-purified diets were formulated to investigate the effects of dietary lipid and lecithin levels on the performance and carcass composition of post-larval Penaeus monodon Fabricius.Supplementary soyabean lecithin levels from 0 to 9% and total dietary lipid (cod liver oil:soyabean oil at a ratio of 3:1) levels from 3·5 to 12·5% at 3% increments were tested in diets that were isonitrogenous and isoenergetic. The diets were fed for 50 days to triplicate groups of post-larval P. monodon held in a laboratory marine recirculated water system.Despite poor overall performance due to the purified dietary ingredients, the absence of basal lipids and/or lecithin was found to result in the poorest performance. Optimum production was obtained with a diet containing 3% basal lipid and 3% lecithin at a total lipid level of 6·5%. The addition of dietary lecithin (particulariy at 46·63% of the total lipid) at up to 3% in terms of growth, feeding efficiency and production or 6% in terms of survival significantly (P 〈 0·05) increased shrimp production. Lecithin was therefore probably acting as a growth, survival and/or phago-stimulant in P. monodon. The total lipid requirements are consistent with those reported by other workers for penaeid shrimp, and are probably a result of the requirement for essential fatty acids, the stimulant properties of lecithin and the calorigenic effects of high dietary lipid levels.

Notes: Abstract. The effects of the frequency of manure application (twice weekly, weekly and fortnightly) on prawn production and pond dynamics in culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) were assessed. Juvenile freshwater prawns were cultured for 100 days using pelleted feed and organic fertilizer. Results showed that the greatest (but not significantly different) marketable prawn yield was achieved with fortnightly manuring, but the most stable pond environment as based on oxygen dynamics, developed with weekly fertilization. The highest concentrations of chlorophyll, nitrogen and phosphorus occurred with fortnightly applications, but so too did the lowest ratio of gross primary production: respiration. System dynamics are discussed.

Notes: Previous reports have shown an increased frequency of certain HLA antigens in association with erythema multiforme, including HLA-B15(B62), HLA-B35, HLA-A33, HLA-DR53 and, more recently, HLA-DQB1*0301. A strong association with HLA-DQ3 has been documented in patients with recurrent erythema multiforme. We have performed HLA typing in 39 patients with recurrent erythema multiforme, of whom 33 were associated with herpes simplex virus infection. The results were compared with 309 controls. In the recurrent erythema multiforme patients there was a statistically significant increase in HLA-B62 and HLA-B35. An increase in HLA-DR53 was also found, although this did not reach statistical significance. There was no increase in HLA-A33. The presence of HLA-DQ3 in the study population approached that in the controls. Finally, the study population demonstrated a trend towards a reduction in the HLA antigens A1, B8, and DR3.The study confirms the previously reported associations with HLA-B62 (B15), HLA-B35 and HLA-DR53. We have been unable to confirm an association of HLA-A33 or HLA-DQ3 with erythema multiforme. The HLA antigens A1, B8, and DR3 are associated with autoimmune disease, reflecting an increased host response to tissue self antigens. Their absence in patients with recurrent erythema multiforme (REM) may be an indicator of a poor host response to an antigen, which in the case of REM is the herpes simplex virus.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of intraductal papillary adenocarcinoma of the distal pancreatic duct. Although a rare subgroup of exocrine pancreatic tumors, their diagnosis is an important one in view of their favorable prognosis with pancreatectomy. Because of the established behavior of villous tumors of the colon, to which they are similar histologically, these tumors should be resected, even if biopsy shows benign disease. Patients should be followed radiologically for recurrence or the development of new adenoma following resection.

Notes: Abstract The appearance of annular pancreas on magnetic resonance (MR) images is described in a 14-year-old boy with pancreatitis and incomplete pancreas divisum. The presence of the coexisting abnormalities complicated the interpretation of an upper gastrointestinal series and computed tomographic (CT) study. MR imaging was useful as a problem-solving technique to supplement the conventional imaging tests.
