Notes: Abstract In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of 5-fluorouracil (FU) treatment modulated by (R,S)-leucovorin (LV) and interferonα (IFNα) in patients with advanced colorectal cancer, we conducted a phase I trial with increasing doses of subcutaneous IFNα (3×1×106 U, 3×3×106 U, 3×3×106 U, 3×5×106 U and 3×10×106 U/week) and 500 mg/m2 LV i.v. as a 2-h infusion with 600 mg/m2 FU i.v. as a midpoint injection. Unacceptable side-effects occurred in all 3 patients at the highest dose level of IFNα, while toxicity was tolerable at 3×5×5106 U IFNα/week. Thus, this dose was defined as the maximal tolerable dose for IFNα in combination with FU and LV. In a subsequent phase II study a total of 83 treatment courses (median: 2.8, range: 2–10) were administered to 30 evaluable patients. Side-effects were acceptable with no WHO grade IV toxicities. Grade III toxicities consited in thrombopenia (2/30), stomatitis (2/30), diarrhoea (3/30) and nausea/vomiting (4/30). After a median observation time of 17 months (range: 8–22 months), no complete remission was observed and 9 patients experienced a partial response lasting for a median of 6.6 months (range: 3–13+ months), for an overall response rate of 30% (95% confidence interval: 15%–49%). These results show that the described regiment of FU doubly modulated by LV and IFNα is active in colorectal cancer and can be safely administered in an out patient setting with acceptable toxicity. Thus, this regimen is suitable to be used for further evaluation in clinical trials.

Notes: Reference materials of animal origin have been analyzed for Cd, Cu, and Pb contents by voltammetry using ECO-TRIBO Polarograph with pentype renewed Hg electrode after dry ashing in superoxidizing atmosphere (mixture of O3 + O2 + NOx). The contents of all metals mentioned were independently determined in aliquots of identical digests by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Statistical evaluation showed good correlation between both methods. Moreover, dectrochemical results the obtained for biological certified reference material (CRM) 12-02-01 Bovine Liver are in very good agreement with certified values for Cd and Pb.

Notes: The current through the residential grounding circuit is an important source for magnetic fields; field variations near the grounding circuit accurately track fluctuations in this ground current. In this paper, a model is presented which permits calculation of the range of these fluctuations. A discrete network model is used to simulate a local distribution system for a single street, and a statistical model to simulate unbalanced currents in the system. Simulations of three-house and ten-house networks show that random appliance operation leads to ground current fluctuations which can be quite large, on the order of 600%. This is consistent with measured fluctuations in an actual house. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Description / Table of Contents: A New Type of Structure in Oxoiridates with Square-planar Groups [IrO4]4-: K2Na2[IrO4], a Network ∞3[Na2IrO4] with Channels (With a Remark on Rb2Na2[IrO4])For the first time magnificent dark red cuboid single crystals of K2Na2[IrO4] were prepared by annealing intimate mixtures of a) KO0.51, Na2O2, IrO2 and Ir-powder (molar proportions 3.02 : 1.40 : 1.00 : 1.00; Ag-bomb, 740°C, 54 d) and of b) KO0.51, Na2O and IrO2 (molar proportions K : Na : Ir = 2.20 : 2.20 : 1.00; Ag-bomb, 760°C, 57 d) respectively. The oxide crystallizes mP36, space group P21/c with a = 600.35(6) pm, b = 1111.2(1) pm, c = 933.0(1) pm and β = 113.14(1)°.Structure determination via four-circle diffractometer data (Siemens AED 2, Mo-Kα-Radiation) for all 2347 unique reflexions (merged from 9397 Io(hkl) gave R = 0.0357 and Rw = 0.0340. K2Na2[IrO4] crystallizes in a new type of structure. The oxide is antiferromagnetic as magnetic measurements showed (TN = 32 K, Θ = -60.2 K (single crystals) and -49.2 K (powder) respectively, μ = 3.06 μB (single crystals) and 2.93 μB (powder) respectively).Effective coordination numbers ECoN, mean fictive ionic radii MEFIR and the Madelung part lattice energy MAPLE as well as the charge distributions CHARDI and CHARDINO are calculated and discussed.
-49,2K (Pulver); μ = 3,06 μB (Einkristalle) bzw. 2,93 μB (Pulver)).Effektive Koordinationszahlen ECoN, Mittlere Fiktive Ionenradien MEFIR und der Madelunganteil der Gitterenergie MAPLE sowie die Ladungsverteilungen nach CHARDI und CHARDINO werden berechnet und diskutiert.
