Notes: The nucleation and growth of Pt and Ni films deposited on amorphous carbon (a-C) substrates by ion-beam sputtering (IBS) have been followed from an early stage through to complete substrate coverage. The influence of IBS parameters and substrate temperature Ts on deposition rate and metal particle (island) size distributions have been measured. Metal island growth is shown to be predominantly two dimensional in character. Soft-x-ray reflectivity measurements on Ni/a-C multilayers detect the single atom layer increments in Ni island thickness tNi' during growth from the initial (critical) value tNi' = 0.87 nm which is consistent with a theoretical 22 atom cluster model. The influence of the metal island growth stages on the soft-x-ray reflectivity of multilayer mirrors is considered.

Notes: BaO precipitates with sizes between 10–100 nm in laser ablated YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) thin films on Y-stabilized Zirconia substrates have been identified by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The precipitates exhibit equiaxed shapes and grow epitaxially inside and on the surface of the YBCO films, with (001)BaO plane parallel to the a,b plane of YBCO. Some of these smaller precipitates and BaO/YBCO boundaries probably provide potential pinning sites for magnetic flux lines, which might contribute to the observed increase of critical current density with magnetic field B under B≤500 G in the case of B perpendicular to the c axis of the film.

Notes: A model was proposed to describe the effects of surface outgrowths on the microwave surface resistance of high Tc superconducting thin films. Calculated with experimental data the microwave surface resistance at 10 GHz for c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7 thin films with no outgrowths could be as low as 70 and 4 μΩ at 77 and 4.2 K, respectively. The effect of the orientation of the surface outgrowths on the microwave loss has been discussed. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Gravitational coupling within the Earth had been dismissed until about 10 years ago. Inappropriate application of Newton's theorem to the Earth is cited as a reason for this dismissal. For the theorem a new proof is given, a by-product of which is an exact expression for the gravitational potential within a homogeneous ellipsoidal shell of different outer and inner flattening. The gravitational torque on a spheroid inside such a shell can be analytically calculated. When applied to a simplified model of the earth, the gravitational torque between the mantle and the inner core is found to be enormous*, confirming earlier calculations for realistic earth models based on integration of the Clairaut figure equation. The torque is found to be dominated by a contribution arising from a thin layer surrounding the inner core.

Notes: A new projection description for a cubic quasiperiodic crystal (CQC), including a projection matrix, diffraction-intensity calculation and a linear phason matrix, has been proposed. The simulated electron diffraction patterns with appropriate phason parameters agree well with the experimental ones obtained for a rapidly solidified V6Ni16Si7 alloy. The transition from the CQC to its crystalline approximants is treated using the linear-phason-strain concept.

Notes: Summary Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) is recognised as a major pathological constraint to cereal production in northern China and several widespread epidemics have been reported. The host range of BYDV includes not only cereals but many grasses. The indigenous Triticeae of northern China have likely been exposed to significant disease pressure from BYDV and therefore may be a potential source of BYDV resistance for cereal improvement. A wide range of Triticeae accessions collected over three expeditions in northern China were evaluated for resistance to BYDV. Seedlings were artificially inoculated and virus levels then assayed by ELISA. Resistance and immunity to BYDV were found to be widely distributed among the seven genera of Triticeae included in the screening. A high proportion of resistant and immune accessions was found in the genera Hordeum, Leymus, Elymus and Elytrigia. The wide range of reaction types to BYDV found within many species, and even between accessions of some species, indicates that natural selection for BYDV resistance may have been relatively recent in the Chinese Triticeae. A high proportion of resistance and/or immunity was found in Xinjiang compared to the general distribution. From the Chinese Triticeae tested the Leymus species may be the most appropriate material to initiate transfer of BYDV resistance to wheat.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the superconducting behavior of high-T c YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) thin films containing BaO impure phase produced by pulsed laser deposition. The thin films were characterized by the standard four-probe method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD showed that all these thin films contained BaO impurity, with thec-axis normal to the surface of the substrates. The presence of impurity existed from substrate temperatureT s of 727 to 796°C. When these thin films with BaO impurity were measured under the magnetic fields, it was found that the critical current densityJ c increased slightly with increase in magnetic fieldB within the range ofB≤500 G, in the case ofB perpendicular to thec-axis of the film.

Notes: Abstract YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting thin films were deposited onR-plane sapphire substrates with Yttria-stabilized zirconia buffer layer by laser ablation. The structure of the films was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Superconducting transitional temperatures as high as ≥90 K and critical current densities up to 2.2×106 A/cm2 (77 K) were achieved. The results of Auger depth profile showed that no obvious diffusion occurred between the substrate and the YBa2Cu3O7 thin film.
